Concept of internet addiction, man on laptop at nightIn today’s world, the internet is often a part of daily life — people use it for work and for fun, for research and for communicating with friends. But there comes a point where, sometimes, internet use becomes excessive and interferes with daily life instead of augmenting it. Although internet addiction is a very real issue, it is one that has yet to be recognized by either the medical or psychiatric communities, and as such, it is little-studied. A Boston College study from 2003 regarding college student internet usage found that many people (among both male and female undergraduate students) reported an alarming number of dissociative episodes (such as losing time or accidentally remaining online longer than originally intended.

What Kind of Coverage Does Health Net Insurance Offer for Internet Addiction Treatment?

Health Net does not cover internet of social media addiction treatment, as such treatments are currently regarded as “experimental” in nature, and there are no diagnostic criteria for the addiction itself. Health Net may cover costs for problems that accompany or are related to internet addiction, such as depression, but will not cover costs for the treatment of the addiction itself.

Types of Rehabs Health Net Will Pay For

Can I Pay Above What My Insurance Will Provide to Receive Treatment?

If your insurance carrier refuses to pay for your treatment costs, you still have the option of private payment. Internet addiction treatment providers know that most insurance companies do not offer coverage for their services, and as such, they are generally willing to work out a payment plan so that you can get the treatment you need without having to fret about coming up with all of the money at one time.

Inpatient Internet Addiction Treatment vs. Outpatient Therapy

" Although internet addiction is a very real issue, it is one that has yet to be recognized by either the medical or psychiatric communities, and as such, it is little-studied."
Inpatient options for internet addiction treatment are very limited, with extremely few facilities offering inpatient services geared specifically toward internet addiction. However, if your internet addiction has led to or is coexistent with another disorder — like depression — you may be able to receive inpatient treatment for that disorder and have Health Net cover some or all of the associated costs.

Outpatient treatment for internet addiction involves individual or group therapy on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home at the end of the day and remain involved in your usual daily activities while still obtaining the treatment you want and need for your addiction.

Should I Choose a Residential Rehab Center?

There are few residential rehab facilities aimed at treating internet addiction. However, there are some centers in the United States that offer one-month treatment programs for people who suffer from internet or social media addiction. Unfortunately, the costs associated with treatment received at these facilities are not covered by Health Net or most other insurance carriers.

What Does Executive Treatment Offer Over Other Rehabs?

Executive treatment is a relatively new concept that builds upon what traditional rehabs offer. While traditional rehab tends to keep you in seclusion from the outside world while you recover from your addiction, executive rehab gives the option of continuing to work while you receive treatment. In this way, you can continue to perform the vocational duties that are required of you without having to sacrifice the quality and intensiveness of treatment that you desire.

What Treatment Lengths Will Health Net Pay For?

Health Net does not pay for internet addiction treatments of any length. However, if you require treatment for a co-occurring disorder such as major depression, Health Net may cover your treatment costs for varying treatment lengths, up to and including a one-month stay in a residential rehab facility.

insurance-and-addictionIf you do not have health insurance, the door to treatment is still open to you. These providers will generally offer financing alternatives so that you can get the help you need without having to worry about where the money will come from.
