Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services of Southeast Iowa Philosophy

At Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services of Southeast Iowa (ADDS), patients receive high-quality residential and outpatient addiction treatment in a comfortable, non-hospital setting. The facility believes that treatment should be available to anyone, regardless of income, and offers sliding scale fees for Iowa residents.
A complete continuum of care for men and women with substance abuse issues, gambling problems, and behavioral disorders is provided, as well as education and support for family members and other loved ones.

Areas of Specialization

  • Residential Treatment
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

  • Process Abuse Treatment
Not all addictions involve mood-altering chemicals. The term “process addiction” describes the unhealthy use of behaviors (including eating, gambling, sexual activity, shopping, internet use, etc.) that has spiraled out of control and into the realm of addiction.

Located in Burlington, Iowa, the Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services (ADDS) offers a residential program and outpatient-based treatment for adult men and women struggling with chemical dependency. ADDS Burlington is part of a statewide, nonprofit network designed to help individuals overcome addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and other behaviors that interfere with their ability to live happy, healthy, and productive lives. According to its website, the full continuum of residential treatment consists of “primary treatment, medically monitored and half way services.” The facility also offers specialized program tracks for problem gamblers and DUI (OWI) offenders

To be admitted into the residential program, clients must be referred by another treatment program or undergo an outpatient-based assessment to determine an appropriate level of care.

Residential treatment at ADDS includes a structured schedule of individual, group, and family therapy, as well a drug and alcohol education.

According to a survey, alumni also indicated that ADDS may consult with outside psychiatric services to assist clients who are also struggling with issues of trauma, grief, and other emotional or psychiatric issues that may contribute to addictive behavior. ADDS provides two levels of outpatient treatment: an extended, maintenance-focused outpatient program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Consisting of nine hours of group treatment per week, IOP also incorporates individual therapy, family counseling, and relapse prevention education into treatment. The extended outpatient program is open to both adults and adolescent clients.

In terms of specialized offerings at the Burlington office, there are gambling treatment services and a prevention program. The latter strives to educate the community with Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) classes, breath alcohol testing, and drug free workplace training. Department of Transportation OWI evaluations can be conducted, and some translation services are available for non-English-speaking clients.

Unique to ADDS, the facility’s four-year Access to Recovery program helps ensure program services are available to all clientele. The Access to Recovery program provides supports such as job training and life skills workshops, as well as bus passes, gas cards, and clothing/hygiene items, if needed.

CARF-accredited, ADDS employs a team of substance abuse counselors, case managers, and counselors experienced in compulsive gambling.

The residential facility can house up to 20 men and women. Although limited information is provided by ADDS about the accommodations of its residential program, the website does indicate that clients may be required to complete household chores and light yard work while in the residential program and have access to a nearby YMCA. The facility is tobacco-free.

The sole alum polled by at the time of this writing, Paul, provided generally positive feedback regarding his experience. Out of five stars, Paul rating the treatment staff’s level of experience and training with four stars and gave perfect five-star ratings for staff support and the respect shown to clients. Helped us to work on any problems we had.”

The facility accepts some private health insurance plans and Medicaid. ADDS also offers a sliding fee scale for uninsured individuals and/or clients who cannot afford the full cost of treatment. According to the facility’s website, clients are required to pay $217.00 upon admission for the first 21 days of treatment, which is the lowest end of the sliding fee scale. This fee is not applicable to Medicaid clients.
