Located in Brookline, Mass., Arbour-HRI Hospital is a 66-bed, private psychiatric facility that provides inpatient, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) services for adults experiencing mental health and co-occurring substance abuse issues. Part of Arbour Health System, the largest private behavioral health system in Massachusetts, Arbour-HRI Hospital also provides specialized PHP services for women and the LGBT community.

For those with opioid addiction, the hospital offers Suboxone treatment programs to help alleviate any withdrawal discomforts.

Upon admission, patients undergo initial “level of care evaluations” with clinicians to determine the most appropriate treatment program. Psychiatric inpatient service includes stabilization, 24-hour nursing care, medication management, and group therapy. Family education and involvement also plays a major role in this short-term program. Those with dual diagnoses attend on-site 12-step meetings and perform “step-work” throughout their treatment.

The Triangle Program, the hospital’s unique PHP track geared specifically for LGBT individuals, offers treatment designed to address depression, anxiety, sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS, and co-occurring and other sensitive issues. Through group therapy and educational classes, the women’s-only PHP program aims to equip women with coping skills, improve their self-esteem and sense of assertiveness, and provide a safe place to address past traumatic experiences. Both programs make use of evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and referrals to outpatient specialists, when necessary.

Highly recommended as a step-down aftercare service for graduates of inpatient and PHP care and those unable to attend any of the daytime programs, IOP sessions take place Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, for a total of nine hours of treatment per week.

Across its various programs, the hospital employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed clinicians, program directors, group therapists, and master’s level counselors. Nurses provide 24-hour care, and internists are available to address any physical issues that may arise during treatment.

While specific information regarding the facility’s accommodations is limited, the 66-bed private psychiatric hospital runs four inpatient units to better address its patient’s needs. Transportation services may be available for PHP patients, depending on their specific situation.

Alumni surveyed by to date highlighted quality accommodations and meals, and provided top marks for treatment and counseling effectiveness. “Good mentors, structured days, helpful activities. However, location was a weakness. Helpful dealing with dual diagnosis issues,” the one anonymous alum commented.

Secondary sites, however, reveal more polarized experiences and perspectives. On Google, where Arbour-HRI Hospital received an average rating of 2.5 stars out of five from 15 individuals to date, PHP program alum Billy wrote: “I can’t say enough bad things about this place… The environment makes you feel worse than you already do. It’s in the basement. It’s totally low-budget and gives you a cold feeling -- brick walls, no windows, hasn’t been updated since at least the early 80s. The food is worse than prison food. The staff are relatively cold.”[1] Brooke, another Google reviewer, called the hospital “easily the worse place to ever go for help” adding, “They treat you like you are worthless and do not even care how you feel.”

Yet one individual found favor in the “very heavily group-based” Women’s PHP track, and commented on clinicians who “really know their stuff and are great at their jobs.” Addressing the comments made on food in another review, they admitted: “It’s a little hit or miss. Some days it’s fantastic, others its not very good. As an outpatient [client] you have the option of bringing your own lunch or leaving the premises to eat nearby if you’d prefer.” “So,” this alum concluded, “food should definitely not be a deal-breaker.”

Arbour Health System accepts most major insurance providers, including Cigna, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, and United Behavioral Health, as well as Medicare and MassHealth managed care plans.
