ABOUT AXIS RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT

Axis Recovery provides highly individualized, upscale residential treatment for adults for alcoholism, drug addiction, and co-occurring disorders, as well as medically monitored detoxification. The organization operates three centers in Southern California — Axis East in Indian Wells, Axis West in Culver City, and Axis Pacific View Recovery Center in Santa Monica.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Axis bases its care on behavior modification, positive motivation, and collaboration between the client and his or her treatment team. Upon this foundation, treatment combines evidence-based modalities with 12-step principles and holistic activities. The length of treatment varies, but most clients stay for at least 90 days.

During individual and group therapy, family counseling, and a variety of workshops, clients and staff utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). Medical care and medication management are provided when needed, and the facilities also offer yoga, art therapy, physical fitness, nutrition, hypnotherapy, and acupuncture.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

While the composition of the treatment teams depends on the location, employees of Axis Recovery include psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists, and certified alcohol and drug counselors. Many of the recovery technicians also have battled addiction.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Axis East is the most luxurious and longest running of the facilities. Residents live in a spacious, modern house with a limited number of beds, a large backyard, and outdoor pool. Most bedrooms are shared, but a few private suites are available. Additionally, residents benefit from a full-time chef, who ensures everyone can enjoy nutritious, freshly cooked meals.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Many alumni polled by Rehabs.com described their experiences as “life saving,” including Victoria, who gave top five-star ratings and commended the facility for its “love, caring, safe, understanding staff.” Joseph, another five-star reviewer, praised the staff and wanted Rehabs.com to know: "The chef was talented and creative for all food types and allergies and the treatment program was professional and clinical with real tools to use when I got home."

Mikayla, another alum who rendered a five-star rating, summed up her experience for Rehabs.com as: "Axis Treatment East runs a great program and definitely provide inexhaustible amouts of love compassion and support for all of their clients." And Sam, another alum, gave a five-star review for accommodations and wrote: “The after care coordinator found a sober living that fit my needs and I have been at the sober living now for 5 months.”

In contrast to the many highly favorable reviews, Dan offered a one-star rating and told Rehabs.com: “I felt like this was the worst place on earth.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Feedback from loved ones varied. An anonymous reviewer gave four- and five-star ratings in the major categories on the Rehabs.com survey and commented: "The staff was very nice and professional. The center was more like a spa than addiction center that offered detox programs. It was not a bad place, just not what she needed."

D.L., spouse of a former client, who gave high ratings for accommodations, holistic options, and connectivity policies, wrote that her insurance did not cover treatment even though the facility told her it would.

FINANCING

Cost varies depending on length of stay and type of treatments. According to the website, the facility accepts most major private insurance as well as government-issued insurance and private pay.

I work at Axis. And while the objective is to help the clients, The manager here in Indian Wells only seems to care about the company...The primary atmosphere between staff is aggressive. They seem to be looking out for their own positions and out truly makes it a difficult place to work with. There is two exceptions to this and they are one male and one female staff member. The woman brightens an otherwise gloomy job. The guy has a genuine concern for the success of the clients. It seems there is more politics here then Washington DC.

What a relaxing and peaceful experience. The staff was very considerate and compassionate. The chef was talented and creative for all food types and allergies and the treatment program was professional and clinical with real tools to use when I got home and into my own home based 12 step program. I recommend it to those in need of comfort and support, compassion and recovery.

At first I thought I was too young to get sober. Axis showed me that I could still have fun in sobriety, and gave me the tools I needed to live a successful life. At only age 21, I am now sober, mentally stable, and financially independent. I am very grateful for the Axis program & all of the staff for the life I have today.

A lot of emphasis on after care to maintain sobriety after discharge from facility. Nice environment, most staff help to make the whole detox and rehab experience tolerable, minus gross male staff axis is a great place

I am sober today because of them. The facility was great, the counselors were great, the food was ... great. I didn't want to leave, when my time was up, actually.

I don't intend to use drugs or drink again. Unlike most rehabs/sober livings, axis sober living forced discipline onto people to make them change. The successful rehabs and sober livings are not vacation style resorts. Changing is difficult and requires discipline. Most rehabs get people sober but most people dont stay sober afterwards.

My son went here. When he first arrived we were duped into thinking this was an upscale, luxurious homelike setting with a beautiful pool and garden where he could recover and feel happy. Little did we know this is just where he would go through detox for 7 days... most of it spent sleeping and then he would be transferred to the residential treatment home which was run down, and looked nothing like this facility at all. It is co-ed and the games were all missing parts. The basketball was flat and there was not even a pump to fill it back up. My son was dying of heat as it was the middle of summer and there was nothing for him to do to keep his mind occupied. They went daily off-site to a AA meetings and then back to the house. They also were also allowed to use their cell phones for a few hours every day...that made it hard for my son since as an addict, he would contact his friends that were using and hear all about the parties they were going to and chicks they were hooking up with and that only increased his desire to want to leave and do the same. Needless to say he got out and relapsed almost immediately as sober living is not covered by insurance and was too expensive for us. I was extremely disappointed!

It was a very nice place. Everyone knew what they were doing, they were caring and there was always someone there if you needed them. I was on more drugs in that place then I was on the outside. It was also really expensive. If you want to get clean and you have 15,000$ to spend then I recommend this place. However, if you don't want to get clean but you want to spend that kind of money on the Dr giving you a bunch of good drugs then I also recommend this place.

Love, caring, safe, understanding staff. It saved my life, I was almost dead, now I know how to live clean and sober. Since 7.3.08. I knew absolutely nothing about sobriety. To this day I remain teachable. And that the world doesn't revolve around me. And taught me how to help others.

Wonderful staff, beautiful place . They told me my insurance would cover the stay. 3 days in they came to him and said they made a mistake and insurance would cover nothing. Despite BEGGING they still put him on a plane 3 days into recovery and sent me home...only care about $$:( Seemed like it was to good to be true...
