ABOUT BRADFORD HEALTH SERVICES – MADISON

Bradford Health Services offers various programs for drug and alcohol addiction throughout 27 locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee. The facility in Madison, Ala., located 10 miles from the Huntsville International Airport, offers two residential treatment programs — one for adults and one for adolescents ages 13 to 18 — as well as outpatient programs. For those who require stabilization and assistance with withdrawal symptoms, medical detoxification services are provided on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, all clients receive a multidisciplinary assessment to help guide their individualized treatment plan.

Counseling for adults is based on 12-step principles and includes individual, group, and family sessions in a protected and supervised environment. Clients and families are encouraged to attend AA and Al-Anon meetings. Participants can also engage in adventure-based education, which challenges self-imposed limits and develops self-confidence, trust, and respect for others.

Like adult care, programming for adolescents draws upon the 12-Steps. Staff administer therapy in small group sessions and one-on-one. Family participation is a key element of treatment, and teens are also encouraged to participate in adventure programs. Additionally, certified educators are available to help clients with school.

Continuing care is available in the form of partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) care, and continuing 12-steps meetings. The rehab also facilitates alumni charity events.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Treatment effectiveness: Bradford claims that their program is based on the 12-step method, but you don't get much past the second step during the group meetings. Counselor Assistants who conduct the group sessions vary widely in skill and ability to maintain control of the session. Crosstalk is a problem in these sessions. The small group and one-on-one sessions with my counselor were the best therapy in the program. That really worked well and it is the only reason I give it four stars. Accommodations and amenities:This is not a pleasant facility to live in. I was given one thin little pillow, one thin little blanket (which I kept as a trophy) and one sheet for my twin bed. No television in the room, which I shared with a roommate. You could have a radio, but you had to bring it. No exercise facilities at all. Cellphones, tablets and laptops are not allowed. You make phone calls from a payphone. Wakeup is 0500 hours. Rollcall is 0600 hours. Lights out is 2200 hours and almost every hour between rollcall and lights out is occupied with something. The only thing pleasant about Madison was the food, especially breakfast. The free fountain drinks were nice too, but none of the offerings had caffeine and the coffee was drinkable at best. God, keep me sober so I don't have to do that again.

I thought that family participation was a beneficial attribute of the facility; however, they need to offer more holistic offerings.

They are very strong on their 12-step program. However, there is not enough emphasis on faith. I stayed 6 weeks in this facility then did outpatient daily for 6 weeks. Attended meetings 2 times a week. Have been sober 8 years 4 months

Positives included the food, outdoors time, some of the counselors' helpfulness. However, some nurses were extremely rude, some counselors played favorites which was really annoying if you weren't one of them...If I had to go back to rehab I would want to go back to Bradford, regardless of the weaknesses.

The groups were small so you got individual care.

  • Treatment Effectiveness
Needed more training for staff...sink or swim attitude (and) needed more in-services and respect for protocol...(also) hiring staff that understands addictions...some patients needed to stay longer than allowed...(however) even with problems it is still the best around...there is no other facility around here to consider.

  • Treatment Effectiveness
Great clinical support staff. Majority of which are in recovery so they fully understand what the patients are going through. We are always striving to better ourselves and our facility by taking extra training courses....try to keep in contact with our former patients to see how they are doing. Patient care is our top priority.
