Areas of Specialization

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • Out Patient
Outpatient treatment describes all addiction treatment that is not residential. Patients live at home while undergoing rehab.

Chestnut Health Systems, a nonprofit with numerous locations throughout Illinois, has provided treatment services for adults and adolescents struggling with psychiatric disorders, addiction, and co-occurring mental health issues for more than 40 years. This facility in Granite City, located about 10 miles north of St. Louis, offers outpatient addiction programs for adults, including medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone. Detoxification services are available at Chestnut Health Systems’ crisis stabilization unit in Bloomington.

Upon admission, clients undergo an initial assessment to help staff members determine the most appropriate level of care.

The facility’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) consists of nine or more hours of weekly counseling and includes group therapy, individual therapy, and addition education. Clients are also encouraged to participate in 12-step support groups. The less-intensive outpatient program offers one to eight hours of therapy a week and is designed for clients who have already completed residential treatment or an IOP.

Psychiatric counseling and medication management services are also offered at the Granite City facility, and an on-site pharmacy is available.

Under the direction of a volunteer board of directors, the organization employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, master’s level therapists, registered clinicians, nurses, recreational coordinators, and case managers. Chestnut Health Systems has been accredited annually by the Joint Commission since 1975.

Although has yet to obtain employee survey data, current and former employees on gave the facility high scores on Indeed[1], including an anonymous reviewer who said: “Most staff I have met genuinely care about clients. They are open to new ideas, and seek feedback. The recovery focus is very progressive — a major plus.”

Another anonymous employee agreed, telling Indeed: “It is a good place to work! The people are friendly and it is a professional environment with room for advancement.” A four-star reviewer, a housing specialist, also gave some critical feedback, citing “not much appreciation from supervisors” and “lots of paperwork.”

According to Chestnut Health Systems’ website, the facility accepts Illinois Medicaid and a number of private insurance plans. Some state-funded financial assistance may also be available to clients who qualify.
