Founded in 1978, Daybreak Youth Services is a nonprofit that operates five facilities in Vancouver and Spokane, which provide inpatient and outpatient services for teens struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis. In Vancouver, services consist of inpatient treatment for boys aged 12 to 17, and outpatient treatment for boys and girls aged 10 to 18.

Residential services for girls and further outpatient services are available at the facility’s Spokane locations.

The length of stay in residential treatment varies according to the individual client’s needs. During residential treatment, clients participate in at least one hour of individual counseling weekly, as well as weekend family education sessions, family therapy, education about recovery, training in skills such as mindfulness and coping strategies, and multiple support meetings every week. Residents must also complete daily chores.

Outpatient programs consists of individual and group therapy and family education. Group counseling is offered in a variety of courses, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), relapse prevention, and independent living skills.

The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, chemical dependency counselors, social workers and mental health counselors.

The boys’ residential facility has 16 beds. Meals are prepared by staff, who try to accommodate dietary needs that are accompanied by a physician’s note. The single alum polled by to date gave the center four stars for its accommodations and its meals.

The single alum polled by to date, M.E.C., would recommend this facility, and gave it five out of five stars for its staff support and the overall quality of its individual and group counseling, as well as its exercise provisions; however, the center’s holistic options fared more poorly, receiving just one star. “Thats where i gained the knowledge and tools to live a successful life,” they wrote.

At the time of this writing, the center a 4.2-star average rating based on six reviews on Facebook.[1] Commentary on Facebook was slim: “IF YOUR LOOKING FOR TREATMENT FOR 12-13 YEAR OLDS THIN THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO TO PS I WENT THERE IT IS AWESOME,” C.B. wrote in one of just two comments.

At the time of this writing, the Spokane locations of the organization had a one-star rating, a two-star rating, and a five-star rating on Indeed.[2] The five-star rating came from a volunteer and new graduate, who had a positive work-shadowing experience. The other two employees expressed reservations about management, and one noted certain conditions that could impair the quality of treatment, writing: “The work is exhausting and taxing, very stressfull The rules change depending on the supervisors mood Training is poor at best Coworkers are hostile Moral is low.”

According to Daybreak’s website, its services are covered by most insurance carriers; prospective clients are encouraged to contact their provider to check coverage. The center also accepts Washington Medicaid, has at its disposal grants from the State of Washington and the State of Idaho, and operates its own scholarship fund for eligible clients.
