Desert Star Addiction Recovery Center Philosophy
Desert Star offers individuals battling chemical dependency and mental health issues the resources and support to do so. The rehab provides intensive outpatient services for drug and alcohol abuse, co-occurring mental health disorders, eating disorders, and sex and relationship issues. Clients learn how to live their lives without relying on mood altering substances or maladaptive behaviors.
Areas of Specialization
Outpatient treatment describes all addiction treatment that is not residential. Patients live at home while undergoing rehab.
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.

ABOUT DESERT STAR ADDICTION RECOVERY CENTER
Located in the desert of northern Tucson, Desert Star Addiction Recovery Center runs four intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment programs for drug and alcohol abuse, co-occurring mental health disorders, eating disorders, and sex and relationship issues. The CARF-accredited facility, recognized by the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP), also offers on-site 12-step meetings, neurofeedback, and Vivitrol for those with withdrawal symptoms.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Desert Star serves clients through one of its four distinct intensive outpatient programs: Oasis (for alcohol and drug abuse), Mesquite (for eating disorders), Grace (for men with sex and intimacy disorders), and Mariposa (for women with unhealthy relationship patterns).
Across all programs, treatment plans include group and individual counseling, 12-step support meetings, psychoeducation and process groups, acupuncture, spiritual guidance, and nutritional guidance. Those enrolled in Oasis, the substance abuse track, receive screening for detox and medication management. Desert Star also makes use of evidence-based modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), psychodrama, and expressive arts.
In addition, those attending the Mesquite program benefit from a range of additional services including nutritional consults, meal planning, community meals, post-meal processing, grocery tips, and exercise groups. The Grace program utilizes a sex addiction therapist.
All programs feature a second phase of continuing care, offering clients an additional three hours of counseling per week, for three to six months. Desert Star also offers family and couples’ workshops, encouraging loved ones to take an active role in their loved one's recovery.
Led by an executive director with more than two decades of addiction treatment, the facility’s clinical team includes many Ph.D., master’s level, and licensed professionals. These include a psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP), a registered dietitian, a sex addiction therapist, a clinical psychologist, a "psychodrama trainer", a spiritual director, and a handful of counselors and therapists who carry all sorts of expertise with them.

On Facebook, however, where eight reviewers to date gave Desert Star an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars, reports from alumni, family, and staff members alike were excellent. “I absolutely love Desert Star,” claimed Alyssa. “I called them when I had someone in my life who needed help. They are trustworthy and knowledgeable!” J.T., an alum, broadcasted his success story into the web. “Over 3.5 years sober thanks to Desert Star and it's outstanding program!” And D.D.A., presumably a staff member, called the facility in Tucson a “great place to work, but an even better place to see peace.”
Desert Star accepts most insurances, and has preferred provider status with BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, United Behavioral Health, and many others. The facility also offers financing options through American Healthcare Lending and Freedom Loans.
