Since 1966, Faith Home, Inc. has provided residential Christian addiction recovery programming rooted in the belief that “solutions to drug and alcohol abuse can be found through faith in God along with the 12-step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon.” Today, the nonprofit runs three residential facilities, one of which solely treats men from a historic redbrick home in a pretty, residential area of small-town Cowpens, S.C., ten miles from Spartanburg. Medical detox services are not available here.

According to the nonprofit's website, there is generally a waiting list period of three to four weeks for men seeking to enter treatment at the Cowpens facility.

Residential treatment typically lasts eights weeks, and programming includes, Bible study, early morning devotions, 12-step meetings, and regular church services. All residents also adhere to a daily work program, which the facility calls “Physical Therapy,” entailing yard work, kitchen work, house cleaning, and facility and grounds maintenance.

The treatment center offers recreational and social activities such as basketball, hiking, fishing, fitness, Ping-Pong, foosball, choir, and acts of community service, which include volunteering at the local food bank and nursing homes nearby. At designated times, the facility also invites families to join their loved ones in treatment.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, and the single review submitted to to date gave three out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience. The organization points out that it is not a medical facility, suggesting that it does not have any medical doctors on-site.

The center's website notes the men’s treatment facility, based out of the historic Bertha Smith house, features a chapel and plenty of outdoor space, with devotional areas encircled by worship crosses for group meetings. There’s also a vegetable patch and greenhouse - produce from which goes straight to the table.

The only loved one polled by at the time of this writing noted that although “this program worked” for their family member, they did “not believe that faith alone is a substitute for medications.”

They also gave poor ratings for meals and nutrition, counseling options, and family involvement. “Unqualified staff, no treatment for patients with mental disorders, facilities does not allow basic medication,” they added.

According to the facility's website, Faith Home Inc. operates six thrift stores throughout the state’s Greenwood and Spartanburg counties. Proceeds are allocated to provide treatment free of cost.

Strengths: Strong faith based treatment facility. Weaknesses: Unqualified staff, no treatment for patients with mental disorders, facilities does not allow basic medication. I was allowed to enter the facility as the patient graduated from the program. There is very little interaction with the patient during the program. I do not believe that faith alone is a substitute for medications but I will state this program worked for my loved one.
