Frontier Health - Magnolia Ridge Alcohol & Drug Treatment Philosophy

Frontier Health - Magnolia Ridge is a 19-bed alcohol and drug detoxification and residential treatment center specializing in treating addiction and co-occurring mental health and behavior disorders for adults 18 and older. Clients are treated with a traditional course of individual, group and family counseling, supplemented with intervention and medication, when appropriate.

Areas of Specialization

  • Aftercare Support
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.

  • Dual Diagnosis/ Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.

ABOUT FRONTIER HEALTH - MAGNOLIA RIDGE ALCOHOL & DRUG TREATMENT

Part of the Tennessee-based behavioral health provider Frontier Health, Magnolia Ridge offers residential treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse issues. The facility is located in Johnson City, a small city in the northeast corner of the state. Magnolia Ridge’s residential program is for men only (women may seek treatment at Frontier Health’s Willow Ridge), but on-site detoxification is available for both men and women. Additionally, the facility is equipped to care for those struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients undergo a comprehensive substance abuse and mental health evaluation. From there, counselors work with each participant to develop a customized care plan.

Magnolia Ridge’s treatment program is informed by evidence-based, best practice guidelines and the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s evaluation criteria. Residents participate in a mix of individual counseling, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), 12-step work, educational programming, and family therapy.

The length of stay is based upon the client’s individual needs. Magnolia Ridge does not offer aftercare services, but post-treatment, staff provide each client with referrals for ongoing counseling, sober living support, and other services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Magnolia Ridge reports a staff-to-client ratio of 1:4. The facility employs an on-call physician, licensed medical and treatment professionals, and guest speakers as part of the program’s educational component.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Magnolia Ridge is in a residential neighborhood in a mountainous area of Tennessee. The tobacco-free residence houses up to 19 clients at a time. During their stay, clients have access to gym facilities and exercise classes.

Alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com gave the facility’s accommodations, food, and cleanliness above average ratings. The few complaints about the residence addressed the no-smoking policy, and one alum felt that the food could have been better.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Most of the five alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com shared positive experiences, giving specific praise to the Magnolia Ridge staff. The three alumni who were polled on additional metrics gave ratings of four and five out of five stars for family participation, cleanliness, affordability, and the staff’s level of training and experience. Lukewarm ratings were given to the opportunities for exercise and leisure (3.6 stars), connectivity (3.3 stars), and counseling options (3.3 stars). Although holistic offerings were a sole weakness, receiving just 1.6 out of five stars, the three alumni polled to date gave ratings of four and five stars when asked if they would recommend treatment at Magnolia Ridge.

Tracey described the treatment team as “wonderful” and “so helpful,” and Holly wrote: “This program and the counselors and staff saved my life.” Multiple alumni praised the level of family involvement and expressed gratitude for the introduction to the local Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) / Narcotics Anonymous (NA) community.

More critical commentary focused on the need for additional resources, including staff and exercise options. Jeremiah felt that Magnolia Ridge was “not big enough for the city” and added: “Waiting list is way to long to get in. Need more physical activities for patients.” An anonymous five-star reviewer agreed, writing: “Good counseling but not enough exercise.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Like alumni, loved ones found the Magnolia Ridge staff and programming to be highly effective. With a few exceptions, friends and family provided four- and five-star ratings for the quality of their loved ones’ treatment. Overall, when asked if they would recommend the facility, loved ones gave an average score of 4.3 out of five stars.

B.J.S. noted the extra attention given to family engagement, writing: “They went out of their way to be good to us , answer any questions we had.” And while Gina wished the facility offered faith-based treatment options, she commended the “strong counseling and nursing staff.”

Negative reviews were scarce, but Rhonda gave Magnolia Ridge a one- out of five-star review and wrote to Rehabs.com that Magnolia Ridge was a “terrible place.” Chrystal, the cousin of a client, also submitted a one-star review. She provided no details about her family member’s experience, but wrote: “It was unsuccessful treatment. My cousin is no longer with us.”

FINANCING

There's currently no specific information available on pricing via the facility's website. Magnolia Ridge accepts both public and private insurance. Additionally, they offer a sliding scale fees for uninsured individuals who have no funds, or limited funds to pay for services.

They went out of their way to be good to us , answer any questions we had . Required attendance to a meeting every day for 3 mos then 5 days a week for a year and counseling for 1 year . Required restution for every debt that she had made and did not pay and a written apology to every person she had hurt . Her program was paid for by the state . She signed papers to follow thru with the program or she would lose the funding. As a group with counselors they walked to a store every Wednesday and attended church on Sundays as a group.

Strong counseling and nursing staff, but no faith based options. This facility works with individuals and with families to help their patients recover and become alcohol and drug free. They offer great after treatment programs to help people stay sober after leaving the facility

Magnolia Ridge changed my life. The staff is wonderful and they are so helpful. Their main concern is the clients comfort and safety. It was a great experience and I had been in treatment once before, but this place was so much better.
