ABOUT BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE AT THE GERALD CHAMPION REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Located in Alamogordo, N.M., about half an hour from White Sands National Monument, the Behavioral Medicine unit of the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults struggling with mental health issues. There is also an acute inpatient unit designed specifically for older adults with a primary psychiatric diagnosis.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s IOP meets Monday through Friday and conducts its services in the “least restrictive environment” possible, according to hospital’s website.

Treatment is evidence-based and components of the program include individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy. Educational workshops focus on stress management, health and wellness training, grief and loss resolution, and developing conflict resolution skills, communications skills, and coping techniques. Medication management is provided if needed.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, master’s level clinicians, and mental health providers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however one former client and one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing both noted that they wished the hospital offered private rooms.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the hospital’s program mixed reviews. One anonymous alum gave the facility mostly three, four, or five out of five stars across 15 different evaluated metrics, including the facility’s treatment effectiveness, its staff’s level of training and experience, and it’s counseling options. The reviewer gave the facility four stars for its accommodations and amenities, but noted that she did not like the fact that she had to share a room.

The two other alumni offered much more negative feedback and awarded the hospital just one and two stars respectively for its treatment effectiveness. “In a word, awful,” wrote one extremely displease alum, while the other told Rehabs.com that they believed just about every aspect of the facility was a weakness.

The Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center as a whole received an average rating of 2.3 out of five stars based on 28 Google reviews.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility a mostly positive review, awarding it four stars for its treatment effectiveness and its staff’s level of training and experience. When asked, on a scale from one to five, if they would recommend the facility, they gave it five stars. Their one complaint was the lack of private rooms.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, some commercial insurance is accepted, as is Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance is available to uninsured clients who qualify.
