Rehabs.com Editorial Review

Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

In operation since 1948, Helen Ross McNabb Center of Knoxville, Tenn. provides a range of behavioral health treatment and psychiatric services for adolescents, children, and adults struggling with chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, or co-occurring disorders. A specialized program of the regional treatment provider, Great Starts is a structured, supportive living program designed for pregnant women and mothers with young children who are recovering from chemical dependency or co-occurring disorders. Typically utilized as an aftercare service after primary treatment, Great Starts does not provide on-site detoxification services.

Upon admission into the sober living facility, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse and psychiatric assessment to identify specific needs. According to the facility’s website, Great Starts utilizes evidence-based treatment approaches to treat co-occurring disorders. During residential treatment, clients may participate in individual and one-on-one counseling sessions to address underlying factors that may have contributed to addictive behavior, such as trauma, abuse, depression, and stress. The facility may also provide ongoing medication management to treat co-occurring psychiatric symptoms.

Helen Ross McNabb Center’s programming approach also incorporates the 12-step model of recovery. Residents in Great Starts may attend 12-step meetings, be required to obtain a sponsor, study fellowship literature (Big Book), and perform associated “step-work” while residing the home. In addition to counseling, residents may attend educational classes on a range of topics to promote sustained recovery, such as coping skills, trigger avoidance, and stress management. As a program designed for pregnant women and mothers of young children, the facility may also offer parenting workshops.

According to the facility’s website, Great Starts’ goal for mothers is to “strengthen the mother-child bond through comprehensive services for mothers and specialized care for their children.” To strengthen this bond, the mother and child may participate in parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT), while children may receive specialized programming to promote social and cognitive development. If necessary, clinicians may also facilitate expressive therapy and play therapy to identify and help children process issues of trauma.

While specific information is limited concerning the staff of Great Starts, Helen Ross McNabb Center employs a multidisciplinary team comprised of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, registered nurses, licensed social workers, case managers, and behavioral health technicians. Helen Ross McNabb Center is CARF-accredited.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings; however, the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing generally approved of the facility’s accommodations and amenities. Out of five stars, the former resident offered four-star ratings for both the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, as well as the facility’s exercise opportunities and leisure activities.

Along with the facility’s accommodations, the anonymous alum polled by Rehabs.com also praised other aspects of the facility. The alum awarded a four-star rating for the facility’s counseling options, its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. Also submitting a four-star rating for the facility’s inclusion of holistic treatments, the alum simply wrote: “Good facility overall.”

Reviews from secondary sources generally supported this positive assessment. On CiteHealth, three out of four reviewers praised the facility, namely the facility’s staff;[1] however, two reviewers expressed concern that qualified staff members were leaving the facility. Offering a perfect five-star rating for the facility’s quality of care, one anonymous alum wrote: “The staff is absolutely incredible at the Great Starts Nursery but seem to be disappearing...,” while another alum added: “The staff has always been great! However, for whatever idiotic reasons the staff seems to be evaporating.” A third reviewer simply wrote: “I'm a former client and graduate. This place saved my life…”

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs; however, the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com gave a four-star rating for the facility’s affordability.
