Rehabs.com Editorial Review

Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Founded in 1966, Harbor Recovery Center (formerly Harbor House) in Fort Smith, Ark. is part of Harbor House, Inc. — a two-facility treatment provider that also operates a women’s facility called Gateway Recovery Center.

Harbor Recovery Center provides residential treatment for men struggling with substance abuse in Fort Smith, Ark. The facility also offers outpatient services, a six- to 12-week intensive outpatient program (IOP), and specialized services for those with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or chronic pain. Detox services are not offered on-site.

Treatment at Harbor Recovery Center begins with a comprehensive evaluation. During testing, staff pay particular attention for signs of PTSD, depression, and anxiety in order to more appropriately address those complexities during treatment.

Harbor Recovery Center integrates 12-step principles, alternative practices, and evidence-based approaches during treatment. This is done using a mixture of hypnotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The facility has 30, 60, and 90-day residential programs.

In a typical week of residential care, men participate in at least six hours of interactive group counseling, and one or more hours of individual therapy. They also have at least five hours of recovery support groups (e.g. AA, NA, or SMART Recovery).

After the residential program, if needed, clients can make arrangements to live at Cornerstone, the organization’s transitional living facility for men, where they can stay for up to two years.

There is limited information available regarding Harbor Recovery Center’s staff; however, the facility does mention that its all-male staff have each worked at least seven years as substance abuse counselors.

Despite limited information about Harbor Recovery Center’s living arrangements and related offerings, there are some details about Cornerstone, the organization’s transitional living facility. At Cornerstone, there is 24-hour security and video surveillance, as well as a recently renovated kitchen, dining area, and laundry room. Clients live in single, double, and triple occupancy rooms.

Four alumni on Rehabs.com rated the facility’s cleanliness and affordability highly, with an average rating of four out of five stars for both. Alum Clayton summarized the facility: “This is a decent facility. They are government based, ran and operated by recovering addicts.” Three of the four alumni also cited the staff consisting of recovering addicts as a strength.

All four alumni criticized the facility for its understaffed, limited resources. Alum John reported to Rehabs.com: “It would be much better with more staff members.”

The sole loved one on Rehabs.com rated Harbor Recovery Center’s family participation five out of five stars and gave high ratings in cleanliness, the staff’s level of training and experience, and counseling. She rated the holistic offerings and affordability lowly, however.

On Google Reviews, Harbor Recovery Center has an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars based on six reviews.[1] One review, from Kayli, a spouse of a client, gave the program three stars, writing: “My husband is reciving treatment there and he is doing fantastic.”

According to the facility’s website, Harbor Recovery Center accepts most insurance plans.

Employs mostly people who were addicts. Small facility with limited resources . We used it because it was close to home. It was an hour away, while other treatment facilities were over two hours away

This is a decent facility. They are government based, ran and operated by recovering addicts. They are based off a twelve step program and use those steps and recovery stories for clients. At the time I was there some of the staff could use some more training in professionalism.

They have all had experience with recovery. Way understaffed. It would be much better with more staff members.

The residential treatment and transitional living experience in addition to counselor's encouragement to make better decisions on a consistent basis by working a 12 step program empowered me to start a journey in recovery.
