Hawaii Island Recovery Philosophy
Hawaii Island Recovery is the Big Island’s premiere residential drug and alcohol treatment center. The facility offers a comprehensive continuum of care in a comfortable, tranquil, and serene setting. Evidenced-based treatment modalities are combined with holistic and experiential therapies (such as the program’s unique Dolphin-Assisted Psychotherapy) to give clients a well-rounded recovery experience. Individualized treatment plans, a low-client-to-staff-ratio, and compassionate care pave the way for a full and lasting recovery from addiction, co-occurring disorders, and chronic pain.
Areas of Specialization
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desenzitizaion and Reprocessing)
Hawaii Island Recovery provides an array of coordinated therapies to address the individual’s specific needs, issues, and problems that occur together with and contribute to his/her addiction. These include anxiety, depression, mood swings, issues of self-esteem and self-confidence, fears, excessive guilt, indecisiveness, lack of goals, low motivation, relationship issues, etc. One of the evidence-based therapies utilized is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR utilizes the brain’s own healing power to resolve traumatic memories that contribute, without the person’s awareness, to present symptoms and problems. Trauma is easily recognized in the events such as natural disasters, accidents, acts of violence, rapes, deaths, etc. that are diagnostic criteria for PTSD. But trauma may also be evidenced by any event in the past that has a persistent negative effect in the present.
Wild Dolphin Assisted Psychotherapy
Experiential therapies are intended to inspire insight and healing through one’s own exploration of their feeling state relative to a new experience. Unique the world over, Hawaii Island Recovery’s Wild Dolphin Assisted Psychotherapy is a powerful experiential therapy that interfaces our clients with wild dolphins in the open ocean. Imagine the intelligence of a creature that approaches us by choice in its natural environment, motived by curiosity and a mutual affinity to seek out our company. Our likenesses are many; we share in common rich and complex inner worlds, we are sentient, self -aware mammals who experience a wide spectrum of emotion and foster deep attachments. To look a wild dolphin in the eye, is to feel the presence of something extraordinary. That is what will define your WDAP experience, what YOU feel at that moment. Maybe it will transform you, ignite feelings of joy, aliveness, gratitude, and calm. The experience is yours to uniquely discover.
Addiction is a complex condition which affects all aspects of a person’s life. Left untreated, addiction is a chronic, debilitating and often life threatening disorder that diminishes one’s health, happiness and capacity to live a productive and fulfilling life. Hawaii Island Recovery approaches addiction as an affliction affecting body, mind and spirit. To support a full and enduring recovery, all manifestations of an addiction require attention to ensure a lasting return to wellness. Our experiential and holistic therapies are designed to inspire, stretch, sooth and restore you to a natural state of wellbeing.
As the Big Island’s premiere residential treatment center, Hawaii Island Recovery offers the most effective holistic therapies available to treat addiction. Our holistic therapies used in combination with traditional modalities provide our clients with a synergistic array of healing practices to ensure their full recovery from their addiction in body, mind and spirit. Hawaii Island Recovery offers Reiki, Acupuncture, massage, and yoga to support the healing process. Homeopathic, naturopathic and nutritional support are also available.
Recreational activities include but are not limited to swimming, snorkeling, hiking, golfing, fishing and surfing. Regular outings to areas of cultural significance are scheduled with the input of clients. These include Volcano National Park and the City of Refuge. Recreational activities are planned according to client ability and are designed to have a physical component to improve motor skills and conditioning, a social component and/or an educational component. It is the goal of our recreational activities to provide clients with a supervised setting in which to practice appropriate social interactions, improve their physical condition and foster healthy interests that support long term sobriety.
Hawaii Island Recovery’s Equine Assisted Psychotherapy program engages our clients with horses in unexpected ways. Horses have been said to mirror our emotions back to us, and what they reflect often surprises us! Equine Assisted Psychotherapy can help clients access feeling states that were not accessible through talk therapy and may also aid with verbal and non-verbal communication, improved self-awareness and expanded capacities for lateral thinking, problem solving and team work.

Hawaii Island Recovery helped get me on the road to recovery. Kind of like a jump start and a push in the right direction. They also provided the tools I will need along the way and the encouragement to keep going. But that wasn’t all. The overall experience gave me a new lease on life. It happened without me even noticing! I learned patience and acceptance. I became more open minded and social. I began waking up at 6 am and falling asleep by 11 pm - naturally! I have strengthened my relationship with god. I formed lifelong friendship and gained source of support. I feel energized throughout the day, I am able to deal with stressful situations, but most of all, I am happy! And for that, I am incredibly grateful.
Hawaii Island Recovery is a life-changing program; It has saved my life and help hold my family together. When all hope seemed to be lost, HIR managed to help me bring myself back to the light. I initially struggled to get out of my mind where my thoughts consumed the darkness and me took over. I used alcohol to self medicate to cope with anxiety, sleep and turning off my thoughts. HIR helped me regain my mental, spiritual and physical strength. I will be forever grateful for everything they have done for me and for my new found life. I can’ t thank HIR enough for their endless guidance, support, compassion and aloha that they have freely given to me. Thank you for saving my life. HIR. My family and I will never forget how amazing this experience was. All our love and Aloha to the entire HIR staff and program.
When I came to H.I.R. I was broken and sick and scared of my own shadow. I can honestly say today as I am getting ready to go back home I am a new woman. I have found myself and my future and a new family. H.I.R. saved me in so many more ways than one. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I love you all.
After struggling with addiction and recovery for over half of my life I finally surrendered my will and care over to Hawaii Island Recovery. They welcomed me with open arms into a safe beautiful home and loved me until I could begin to love myself. Every staff member has been so kind and helpful. This has been an experience in self growth beyond my wildest dreams. From detox to working on the root of my problems I have felt save, comfortable, and in the right place. I never dreamed that Recovery could be such a beautiful process in such a beautiful tropical oasis I you are struggling, or near death as I was, HIR is without a doubt the place to go to Recover. Thank you everyone at HIR for saving my life and for all of the fun times we have had in the process. Love Always.
Hawaii Island Recovery has been such an amazing experience for me. This was not my first time being in a treatment, but HIR had everything I feel like my past efforts at getting sober missed. This staff are some of the best people I’ve ever met in my life and were beyond instrumental in my recovery. I was able to pour the foundation to a new sober life and for that I’ll be forever grateful to HIR and would recommend it to anyone struggling with addiction.
I’ve met mentors here who have “walked my walk” and understood what it took to live a clean and sober life. For the first time in my life, I felt there was hope for me. I’m slowly gaining trust back from family and friends that I have hurt in the past. Thanks to the experiences at HIR, I’ve truly learned to live a happy and sober life. Mahalo to all at Hawaii Island Recovery!
I learned that at the age of 44, having the same habits developed for half of my life, if I continue to do the same thing and expect a different result that is insanity unto itself. Life! Live, Love! Stay with the Program. It is not easy but the rewards will reward you like you cannot believe.
After going through four treatments my life seemed as hopeless as ever. I knew that I couldn't stop drinking and doing drugs. I had pushed away my family and friends. I didn't feel like I was a bad person, I just needed help. Coming to Hawaii for recovery gave me new lease on life. It works! It really does. Life is great and my family is excited.
Everything seems like it´s fallen back into place after I returned back here. My break to Hawaii changed things a lot for me and I am now able to view things in a different light. I would have not done it without all you guys help. I am thankful and grateful for all that was given to me.
From top therapy to integrating my post user life, you gave me the tools to make a real difference in the world Life is amazing, and to think, at one point I considered that my only option was to end it all! Now I can hardly wait for each new day - thank you from the bottom of my heart.
After a family intervention I agreed to go and get treatment. I loved the thought of a community based treatment center. The therapy I received was exceptional. The staff went out of their way to work with me. I stayed 120 days and I knew from the second I left the program I was going to make it.
As a trainer, I deal with personalities all the time. This program got me to believe in me and my passion for health and fitness and helping others get better. My way of being of service as an AA member.

ABOUT HAWAII ISLAND RECOVERY
Located on the northern tip of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, the residential rehab of Hawaii Island Recovery (HIR) provides treatment for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and behavioral addictions. The facility treats a wide range of disorders including food, sex, gambling, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse. The facility is also certified to treat co-occurring disorders such as anxiety and depression. Detox services are available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Hawaii Island Recovery uses multiple evidence-based, holistic, and experiential treatments to treat a variety of conditions. The facility is exclusive, limiting its patient capacity to eight clients at a time. Each client participates in an individualized program designed to mix treatment options for optimal results. Because of this, the length of stay varies on a person-to-person basis; however, most programs are based around monthly segments and could run 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the chosen treatment options.
Individual counseling, group therapy, and 12-step meetings form the backbone of treatment plans. Diverse therapeutic techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR), and hypnosis are used, along with experiential treatments. One of the leading treatments used is dolphin exposure which is reported to have highly successful results in cultivating changes in patients.
Attendance at off-site Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings is required, and residents are encouraged to get sponsors and participate in service work. HIR also makes the most of its natural environment with activities such as animal-inclusive therapies. Holistic therapies such as Reiki, massage, acupuncture, and yoga are also offered.
The staff includes board-certified physicians and psychotherapists, master's level registered addiction specialists, licensed addiction counselors, and licensed naturopathic doctors and acupuncturists, among others.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Residents live together in a large house with an outdoor pool and a porch with ocean views. Meals are prepared by a private chef in the fully-equipped kitchen. Recreational activities such as hikes, snorkeling trips, and excursions to the Volcanoes National Park are organized, and clients are given membership to a gym, along with ongoing personal training sessions.
