Rehabs.com Editorial Review

Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers operates six outpatient treatment centers in North Carolina, for adults and adolescents who are struggling with substance abuse. The Charlotte facility is located six miles southwest of downtown Charlotte, beside Renaissance Park and amid several commercial facilities.

Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers is a non-12-step treatment center, and does not offer medications such as methadone and Suboxone. Rather, the organization prides itself on getting to the root causes of addiction, through treatment it bills as individualized and holistic. The primary course of treatment available at this location is an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets for group therapy three times a week and individual therapy at least twice a week.

Alongside individual and group therapy — including evidence-based methods such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) — the center offers a wide array of holistic options, such as acupuncture, equine-assisted therapy, life coaching, meditation, Tai Chi, and yoga. The center also offers couples’ and family counseling as a core component of treatment. In addition to treating addiction, the center aims to help its clients develop self-esteem, healthy boundaries, and coping skills; and manage stress, anxiety, and depression.

On completion of the outpatient program, clients receive referrals to relevant services for continuing care and self-care, such as therapists, gyms, sober coaches, and sober-living facilities.

According to Legacy’s website, staff at the Charlotte facility includes an MD and master’s level counselors, as well as a massage therapist, an acupuncturist, a martial arts specialist, and a life coach. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff’s qualifications gave the center one out of five stars in this category.

The single alumni review submitted to Rehabs.com to date was negative. A.B. described a lack of individual attention and education, and wrote: “I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Legacy… I had a series of relapses, and was never called out on hot U/As, it was only discussed when I brought it up. I found AA to be much more beneficial than the IOP.”

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded limited but unanimously positive coverage, with three five-star reviews on Google.[1] “These guys are wonderful. Such a great place to be if you need help with addiction!” Laura wrote, and fellow alum Jeremy described receiving lab tests that helped him get to the bottom of his nicotine addiction.

The single review submitted to Rehabs.com to date was negative. “POOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE FAMILY. NO ROUTINE, NO SUPPORT, SPONSORS NOT IN PLACE AND STAFF IS POORLY TRAINED,” wrote Michelle, whose child attended treatment at this center. Michelle also gave the facility one star for its overall effectiveness, holistic options, staff support, family program, and treatment for addiction and mental health disorders.

According to the facility’s website, Legacy Freedom Treatment Centers accepts most major health insurance plans, as well as cash, checks, and credit cards. The organization does not accept Medicare or Medicaid.

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Legacy. Upon hearing their mission statement, I had hopes that the program would be a perfect fit. The day groups consisted of a counselor in the room as everybody "checked in". There were rarely any guided personal development activities, no educational component. I had a series of relapses, and was never called out on hot U/As, it was only discussed when I brought it up. I found AA to be much more beneficial than the IOP. I had thought I didn't like AA meetings until I expeienced Legacy "Freedom"
