ABOUT LINCOLN TRAIL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Located in a small city dominated by the Fort Knox Army Base, Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System offers residential and outpatient treatment services for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The facility accepts both adolescents and adults and offers medically monitored detox services on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System’s highly structured, 28-day residential substance abuse program combines 12-step methodology with evidence-based practices. Treatment is tightly scheduled around regular group therapy and individual counseling.

The adult program follows the Living in Balance Model, which focuses on relapse prevention and provides opportunities for clients to utilize learned living skills in extensive group sessions. Clients attend on-site AA/NA meetings and work with their counselors to create an individualized Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to support sobriety upon discharge. Downtime is spent studying AA’s Big Book, but there are also some on-site recreational activities.

The adolescent residential program, known as Courage to Change, engages participants ages 13 to 17. This group has its own designated treatment team and utilizes The Seven Challenges motivational program to address co-occurring life skills deficits as well as situational and psychological problems in young people. Led by teachers from Hardin County School System, individuals must attend school on-site. The facility also offers The Willows Program for teen girls dealing with sexual trauma.

In part due to being located close to a military base, this facility offers separate treatment for veterans, active duty military, reservists, and the National Guard. The Military Program is for such individuals who are also experiencing a substance abuse disorder along with co-occurring mental disorders typically related to combat and stress. Additional therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness.

Family therapy is a major component of both the adult and adolescent programs, and there are also intensive outpatient programs (IOP) offering additional programming such as the Matrix Model and Seeking Safety.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The multidisciplinary treatment team includes addictionologists, psychiatrists, and certified alcohol and drug counselors (CADC), as well as case coordinators, social workers, nurses, and activity therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System is a lockdown facility, which means that clients cannot leave the property during treatment other than for a medical emergency. This 140-bed rehab provides a co-ed dormitory setting, with meals served in a cafeteria. Residents also have access to a gymnasium and art room.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Reviews for Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System are mixed. Gary told Rehabs.com: “This was a very informative place. I learned a lot about myself, and what it takes to stay sober. I like the way they taper the withdrawal medicine down, so it makes for a nice detox.”

F.A.K. gave stellar marks for group counseling, accommodations, training and safety, individual counseling, and frequency and consistency of sessions, and reported to Rehabs.com: “…an excellent program and it worked for me.”

Teri praised the “education staff,” but noted to Rehabs.com that there were not enough opportunities for exercise. And Chung wrote on Google Reviews: “Caring, well-educated staff. Daily medical assistance. Great therapists. Coping skills taught. Activities included gym, art.”[1]

But dissatisfied alumni criticized the staff and the facility’s professionalism. D.C., who was admittedly young during her residency, wrote that staff treated clients like “garbage.” And Kristy told Yelp: “Don't expect confidentiality with your medical history or medicines. They will be discussed openly in the hallway, between 2 nurses out on the smoke patio while everyone is within 10 feet of them, and discussed at the desk with people lined up right next to it waiting to get their meds.”[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones polled by Rehabs.com also offered mixed feedback. W.E.B. called the facility inhumane and told Rehabs.com: “They made him worse than when he was before. I would beg someone else not to go to this place.”

But an anonymous reviewer called the staff friendly and understanding, and reported to Rehabs.com: “They did everything they could to help a family member. They also helped us outside the box to understand and gave us ideas on ways to help.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has not received any feedback from staff at the time of this writing, but a former nurse wrote to Indeed that “Patients are admitted when no bed is available and will have a mat in the day room area on the floor.” Most negative reviews note that they were always too busy and had little to no time for breaks and that management was unsupportive. A former receptionist, though, found this sort of atmosphere pleasing and wrote, “I leaned great lessons about multi tasking and being mindful of work load of co workers. I enjoyed the fast pace of the office.”[3]

FINANCING

Lincoln Trail Behavioral Health System accepts most private insurance plans, as well as Medicare, Tricare, and Medicaid (under the age of 21).

Strengths: Former addicts in recovery. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Weaknesses. Very little down time. This was a very informative place. I learned a lot about myself, and what it takes to stay sober. I like the way they taper the withdrawal medicine down, so it makes for a nice detox

Strengths: One on One counselling, group therapy, allows family involvement. Weaknesses: Not enough professionals on site, and need more aides. A family member was there. We were allowed to visit and participate in family groups and express our feelings about the situation.

Number 1 they care. They have friendly and understanding staff. They make you feel like a PERSON with a problem instead of a problem. Had a good experience. They did everything they could to help a family member. They also helped us outside the box to understand and gave us ideas on ways to help.

They are very disiplined with the patients but also fair as well. They were always kind, & understanding. I think they should allow family more than once a week visiting.

was admitted here my sophmore year in high school. Im now a senior i still cant even put into words how terrible this place is. They treat you normally at first then the turn for NO reason at all treating you like garbage. Although their where a few staff members that at least tried to pretend to care about you. And very few that actually cared.
