Malibu Beach Recovery Centers Philosophy
At Malibu Beach Recovery Centers, each client benefits from a highly personalized recovery plan developed by our expert, multidisciplinary team of medical professionals. Our integrative approach combines evidence-based addiction treatment with complementary holistic therapies designed to heal mind, body, and spirit and encourage an overall healthy lifestyle, free of the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Areas of Specialization
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
Though not all rehab facilities offer “medical detoxification,” all people with an addiction to drugs or alcohol will experience intense physical and emotional changes and discomfort as their bodies react to withdrawal of the addictive substance. Many people use the term “detox” to refer to the period of time (ranging from a few days to a week) when the body is reacting to an addict’s decision to stop using.
This includes mindfulness training, somatic therapy, and movement therapy. These treatments are helpful for mood disorders such as depression and anxiety; and is especially helpful for those with PTSD.
Creative Arts Therapy
Writing, making art or engaging in theater can be deeply therapeutic for people working to recover from addiction. Many facilities offer one or several forms of creative arts therapy as a way to help patients learn to express their feelings in productive ways.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.

According to the MBRC website, each program works to “restore brain chemistry” and “repair the brain’s reward system.” An integral component of rehabilitation is the Malibu Recovery Diet, which was developed to raise dopamine levels naturally. Clients may also take related cooking courses.
Both residential and intensive outpatient programs provide gender-specific therapies built on daily routines of exercise, skills development, counseling, individualized treatment plans, and education. Family involvement is encouraged.
In keeping with its treatment programs, the staff is also multidisciplinary. The staff leadership includes a psychiatrist with dozens of affiliations with medical schools, mental health research institutions, and hospitals; clinical psychologists with diverse treatment specializations, and experienced nurses and healthcare administrators.
