ABOUT THE MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM - FOUNTAIN CENTERS IN ALBERT LEA

The Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea is a hospital in southern Minnesota. According to its website, its substance abuse treatment facility, Fountain Centers, was founded in 1974 and provides a range of services to those struggling with alcoholism, drug abuse, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Both inpatient and outpatient programs for adults are available here, as well as medically monitored detoxification services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, treatment is based on 12-step principles and strongly promotes participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Inpatient programming is gender-specific, and program descriptions published on the website indicate that traditional 12-step approaches are supplemented by individual, group, and family therapy, relapse prevention work, and motivational enhancement therapy.

A recreational therapist engages clients in a variety of activities such as indoor rock climbing, fishing, canoeing, swimming, walking, and outings in the community. Clients also participate in educational classes covering topics such as stress management, healthy living, triggers, and managing cravings. There’s also an Extended Care Program for clients with a history of chronic relapse. It lasts 60 to 90 days, during which clients stay in a community-based residence.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes medical doctors, registered nurses, and licensed alcohol and drug counselors.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

While there is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, Fountain Centers received an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities based on the six alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the six alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com, five gave the facility positive-to-mixed reviews, while one gave a very negative review, describing the facility as “not understanding, but cold and concerned about [their] success rate.”

All other reviewers felt that the staff was experienced and compassionate, and indicated that the program provided solid, effective treatment. “The staff are experienced, and there's a lot of things to go do which helps us develop healthy Habbits,” Michael wrote in a representative review. Mitch added: “6 of my buddies and I attended Fountain Lake over a period of a year. All 7 of us have maintained sobriety for over 33 years with no relapses.”

One former client, who was satisfied with treatment overall, complained that the facility itself was a bit rundown, while another mostly positive alum noted that the treatment plans weren’t as in depth or focused on underlying issues as they could be.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones gave the facility mediocre feedback. The six reviewers who were surveyed about the following categories gave the facility average ratings of two out of five stars for its holistic offerings, 2.83 stars for its connectivity and visitors policy, 3.83 stars for its affordability, 3.5 stars for its counseling options, and 3.67 stars for its staff’s level of training and experience. One anonymous reviewer told Rehabs.com that thier “loved one benefitted greatly,” while another noted: “Fountain Center seems to have a very well-run program.”

Complaints included the need for updated facilities and more holistic offerings.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, the hospital accepts commercial insurance, the Consolidated Chemical Dependency Treatment Fund (CCDTF), and participates in most southern Minnesota provider networks.

they were not understanding, but cold and concerned about there success rate. I felt the experience was more of a money game than anything else.

Since I didn't get the chance to go to family week, I felt that the client (my loved one) didn't completely get through the treatment.

Doctors appointments were a strength of the facility. It is a 30 day program. Most are. My daughter made it for awhile. Programs need to be affordable and definately long term. Or free for who ever needs it.

The staff are experienced, and there's a lot of things to go do which helps us develop healthy Habbits. The treatment plans are weak meaning they aren't in depth, and there is little motivitation to express deep and recurring issues. I went there relapsed for a little over a year, and I'm now three months clean.

Strengths: The people that worked there. Weaknesses: Counselor not understanding completely. Fountain Centers is a great rehab facility. The women's housing was in the old hospital, the area was needing updating, maintenance or tear it down and replace it with a new facility.

Newer building and experienced staff were strengths of the facility. However, it was costly. It was required for my sister due to legal issues.

This facility accepted my brother in time of need. My brother's alcoholism is chronic (30 years, he is 47). This is not is first treatment stay (although is is the first here). We cannot know the effectiveness until some time has passed. Fountain Center seems to have a very well-run program, I know that success now depends on whether he will remain strong enough to fight the addiction long-term. All is good today.

Good group counseling. I did clinicals here, and it was great to speak with the counselors. But a lot of people didn't get full recovery after leaving facility, and came back numerous times, usually because of the court.
