Located in Norton, Mass., North Cottage Program, Inc. is a state-licensed substance abuse treatment facility for adult men over age 17. The facility provides a range of services including sober living, in-patient services, and transitional housing. The facility serves as an intensive care program for those that need support in transitioning to sobriety. It does not accept referrals from anyone (including family or clients) other than staff at rehab facilities. All clients must have a residence in Massachusetts to be eligible.

Admission to the facility requires an assessment by the facility’s staff and a referral from the client’s current program. Failure to maintain sobriety during the application process may result in disqualification from the program. The assessment phase includes an evaluation of client history and current situations as well as screenings for drugs and recent mental instability or illnesses. Applicants are required to participate in drug screenings, including an observed urine test.

The North Cottage Program focuses on rehabilitation. During treatment, clients are restricted from working or driving unless permitted by treatment staff. Typical length of treatment is four to six months to complete all phases of treatment. Treatments utilize evidence-based methods, administered within the framework of the 12-step model of recovery. Clients participate in daily and weekly activities including individual and group therapy, educational seminars, an introduction to the 12-step principles, and participation in recreational activities.

The first part of the program is the intensive treatment program (ITP), which lasts up to 60 days. ITP combines crisis stabilization with living support and client education to prepare clients for continued treatment and to prevent self-destructive behavior. Clients are assigned to a counselor that guides them through the early stages of the program. Treatments consist of daily group meetings and discussion groups, as well as individual therapy sessions, and a 13-stage series of educational course about addiction. These are supported by daily 12-step meetings.

When the ITP program is completed, clients transition into the halfway house program for up to 180 days of support. This program continues the 12-step and therapy meetings, but at a less frequent basis. In this program, clients can apply for driving, employment, and overnight privileges, which are determined by each client’s counselor. Working with counselors, clients can begin their transition back into society by finding employment that doesn’t interfere with treatments.

At the completion of the halfway house program, clients can transition into one of the facility’s two sober living homes to continue support services, where patients are required to find employment while maintaining regular attendance at 12-step meetings. Clients can use this time to find other housing alternatives while establishing routines that help maintain sobriety.

Each client will interact with counselors, treatment specialists, and administrative staff to gain admission and transition through various programs.

North Cottage has several facilities. The ITP program uses a 42-bed facility secluded from other program facilities, intended to help clients focus on immediate treatment needs. The halfway house program uses a 71-bed facility while the sober living facilities house 47 and 21 residents, respectively. The multiphase unit, with a population mixed from different programs, is used as additional living support for the in-patient and halfway house programs.

All clients have access to volleyball courts, pool tables, and TV rooms, as well as a library. Clients can visit the local YMCA for additional recreational activities. North Cottage is a non-smoking program and does not permit smoking of any kind on-site. Smokers will be required to quit smoking before participating in the program.

Strengths: Relaxed atmosphere, no pressure. very Gay friendly. Weaknesses: Poor food menu, client sleeping quarters are old and not updated, not air conditioning for summer and out dated heating system for winter. Favoritism is displayed and practiced by ownership, Probably one of the best places for recovering Gay addicted males zero tolerance for Anti Gay behavior and attitudes.
