Northbound Treatment Services Philosophy

Our mission is to assist our clients in successfully celebrating one year of continuous sobriety. Northbound St. Louis provides quality drug and alcohol treatment services to the greater St. Louis areas and surrounding communities. Our services are unmatched in the region and provide the foundation for successful, lasting sobriety.

Areas of Specialization

  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

ABOUT NORTHBOUND TREATMENT SERVICES — KIRKWOOD, MO

Northbound Treatment Services operates eight substance abuse treatment facilities in Southern California as well as this center in the St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood, Mo. The California centers offer a full continuum of care for substance abuse; this Kirkwood center offers outpatient care for substance abuse and dual diagnosis, in the form of a “family recovery program” that aims to assist not only the adult struggling with addiction, but also his or her family.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

As a whole, Northbound Treatment Services views addiction as a disease and roots its holistic approach in the 12-Steps and group therapy. The Kirkwood facility’s outpatient program typically lasts 12 weeks, followed by a year of aftercare, according to a 2015 profile of the facility.

Specific services and treatment methods available at the Kirkwood facility consist of clinical evaluations, assisting families in arranging evaluations, information and referral services, referrals to Northbound’s residential treatment services in California, on-site family support and aftercare services, and on-site intensive outpatient services that are provided in a “recovery workshop” format.

The center hosts 12-step meetings on-site, and is very active in the local 12-step community.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, however, the center’s website does note that staff work closely with referring specialists such as therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, physicians, and members of the clergy, as well as with family members, in determining the appropriate level of care. Two of the six individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date described the facility’s staff as “weak” or lacking “backbone,” and the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the level of support received from the center’s staff gave it a two-star and a three-star rating.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the four alumni reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date, three were negative and one positive. “Quality, caring service by knowledgeable and experienced professionals,” wrote R.D., the facility’s single positive reviewer.

Two of the four reviewers expressed suspicion of certain staff members. “The counselors were nice but weak and bullied by the recruiter into doing things his way,” A.A. wrote, giving the center one or two stars in most of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its staff support and the overall quality of its individual and group counseling. And James wrote: “This place is shady to me....deceptive (marketing).”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the two reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date, one was positive and one negative. The negative reviewer, J.G., echoed alumni who criticized specific staff members, writing: “Get rid of the program director and get some counselors with more backbone and open mind toward alternative treatments.” J.G. also cited an over-insistence on AA.

A.J., a therapist working in Florida, wrote: “I have had several patients that have come from Northbound Treatment Services. Each patient that I have had all described the quality service they received at Northbound.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

Secondary employment review sites yielded mixed coverage at the time of this writing, with a one-star and a three-star rating on Glassdoor and a 3.8-star average rating based on 12 reviews on Indeed — and it should be noted that all these reviews applied to the organization’s California facilities.[1] [2] Reviewers repeatedly cited low pay, high stress, high staff turnover, and a general feeling of a lack of support and lack of genuine care for staff and clients. “Little room for growth, horrible pay and benefits, little job security. They expect you to work all hours of the day with little to no compensation in return,” one former therapist wrote in a representative review on Indeed.com. However, others described good coworkers, plenty of opportunities to learn, and a supportive atmosphere.

FINANCING

According to Northbound’s website, the organization accepts most health insurance policies, including Aetna, United Healthcare, HealthNet, Value Options, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Professional, knowledgeable, and caring is what I would best describe the staff at Northbound Treatment Services. They understand the disease of addiction and work tirelessly with clients and their families to a better life. I would recommend Northbound to anyone who is, or knows someone who is suffering from addiction. There is a way out, and Northbound helped get me there.

I attended Northbound Outpatient Treatment in Kirkwood, and completed their three month program. Having been to several treatments over the years, Northbound was far and away the most effective treatment that I have ever participated in. They have some of the best counselors, not to mention people in general, that I have ever met. They genuinely care about their clients, and show that with a willingness to be available to them day or night, even outside of normal program hours. Their methods of connecting with clients and responding to their issues are, from my experience, one of a kind and extremely effective. If you, or a loved one, are struggling with any type of substance abuse, I would without a doubt recommend Northbound.

Northbound outpatient in St. Louis MO is an outstanding program. They are second to none in my opinion. Very nice facility, and great staff. They saved my life, and I'm forever grateful for that. This is the only out patient I would recommend to anyone. I've been through many programs, this is definitely not my first rodeo. They went above and beyond to help me out. The counselors really care and you can feel that. I seriously can't say enough.

This place is shady to me....deceptive (marketing) Thankfully I am not the only one that thinks this. Vice has jumped on the bandwagon by investigating (the owner's) past work ethics (at another treatment facility)
