One of six hospitals operated by Palmetto Health, the largest health care provider of South Carolina’s Midlands region, Palmetto Health Richland provides short-term, inpatient stabilization services and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with psychiatric disorders, chemical dependency, or co-occurring issues. Located in the city of Columbia, the 649-bed Palmetto Health Richland also offers medical detoxification.

Upon admission, patients participate in an initial biopsychosocial assessment. If an individual requires detoxification, they will be referred to the hospital’s inpatient program. The goal of the inpatient program, which typically lasts between three and five days, is to safely stabilize the individual and refer them to the hospital’s substance abuse outpatient program through its Addiction Recovery Center.

The Addiction Recovery Center’s programming consists of processing groups, individual counseling as-needed, and educational presentations that focus on relapse prevention, developing coping, communication, recovery skills, stress management, and the disease of addiction. The adolescent program also incorporates an exercise and music therapy components into treatment. All patients are highly encouraged to attend on-site 12-step meetings.

Patients struggling with co-occurring issues also receive psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management. The intensive outpatient program (IOP) consists of 15 hours per week of 12-step programming, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy. For program graduates, the Addiction Recovery Center offers weekly aftercare groups, as well as a specialized aftercare group for impaired professionals who require licensure.

Treatment for primary psychiatric disorders is similar to the substance abuse continuum of care. Palmetto Health Richland offers a partial hospitalization program for adults and IOP for adults and adolescents. Along with medication management, programming for psychiatric disorders consists of individual and group therapy, art therapy, and therapeutic activities.

Palmetto Health Richland’s behavioral health staff is comprised of medical doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, certified addiction counselors, substance abuse and mental health counselors, and licensed social workers.
