ABOUT PRAIRIE VIEW, INC.

Set about 25 miles north of Wichita in the small city of Newton, Kan., Prairie View is a faith-based addiction rehab and mental health treatment facility. The facility provides residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), and outpatient services for adolescents and adults, including those with co-occurring mental health disorders. There is also a specialized residential psychiatric program for children ages 10 to 17. Although the facility does not provide medical detoxification services, Prairie View partners with nearby detox centers to assist clients who require this service.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon intake, clients participate in a medical and psychological evaluation and substance abuse assessments to help develop a personalized treatment plan. Prairie View is founded in 12-step principles and the facility hosts on-site meetings, but it also integrates a range of holistic, evidence-based, and recreational activities into its program.

Modalities include weekly individual therapy, group counseling, and medication-assisted therapy, as well as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Prairie View encourages family participation, which includes addiction education, aftercare planning, and family counseling.

Clients also participate in a range of experiential and holistic therapies such as adventure course participation, yoga, creative drumming, journaling, and artistic expression therapy. In addition, the program utilizes an ancient tool called a Labyrinth, which is an ancient tool to help with meditation. Although Prairie View is a Mennonite-founded facility, the program offers non-denominational spiritual services.

Older clients may choose to enroll in Prairie View’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) called the Life Transitions Program for seniors who need more treatment than therapy alone.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility employs a multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse counselors, family therapists, case managers, masters level psychologists, recreational therapists, a dietician, and an on-site chaplain. Prairie View is accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Set on nearly 80 acres, the Prairie View campus provides clients with views of the prairie. The intimate 14-bed facility offers private rooms, comfortable living areas, an on-site gym, recreation area, and a game room. Prairie View is tobacco-free.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Four alumni provided feedback for Prairie View Newton to Rehabs.com to date. The alumni gave Prairie View above-average ratings of 4.75 out of five stars for its family participation and its cleanliness, and 4.25 stars for its exercise and leisure activities.

Alumni were pleased with the attitudes and experience of the staff members. The alumni gave the facility 4.5 out of five stars for its staff’s level of experience and training. One anonymous alum described the treatment team as “caring and intelligent,” while another wrote: “The services received were very helpful; specifically, the holistic treatment was great.”

Complaints were minimal and included high cost, the need for a smoking room, and “limited access to outside contact.”

On Google, the facility received 2.7 out of five from nine reviews.[1] Many of the reviews discuss negative experiences with staff members. Alum Emily wrote: “Awful, the doctor in charge ignored my issues, talked down to me, and was terrible to other patients.”

On Facebook, the facility earned 3.5 out of five stars from 20 reviews.[2] 10 reviews were five out of five stars. Alum David wrote: “I LOVE LOVE LOVE Prairie View!!! The staff was great! Dr Hon is the BEST! They did a wonderful job guiding me through my problems.” However, alum Scotty wrote: “I might as well have never started treatment.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The five loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility mixed reviews. Three of the reviews were mostly positive, one of the reviews was average, and the other was more negative.

Loved one Ron awarded Prairie View four or five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, the experience of the staff members, accommodations, family involvement, and affordability. “The 30 day program was intense .... and very effective,” he wrote. “I visited my child every evening that he was there and learned a lot about their program.” An anonymous family member also appreciated the staff members and the levels of family participation, and described the program as “very accommodating to families and visitors.”

Yet R.G. gave the facility just one out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, telling Rehabs.com that his loved one felt that the staff and facility were very dismissive and financially motivated, and that she relapsed soon after leaving. And while W.R.D., whose daughter attended Prairie View, gave credit to the “very good staff,” the parent ultimately gave just one star for Prairie View’s treatment effectiveness, noting that the program did not work for their daughter.

FINANCING

Prairie View works with numerous insurance providers, including Tricare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna. For uninsured clients, the facility partners with financial institutions to assist clients in setting up manageable payment plans and accepts self-pay.

My loved one went to Prairie View and relapsed very soon after. She was addicted to opioids. She paid cash for treatment. She felt that the doctor was very dismissive of her when she was discharged after a month. Later, at my suggestion, she called again, when she realized that they had a Suboxone Clinic. She was told that she would have to attend as an inpatient of detox for at least two weeks and then they would decide if she would qualify for the program. She no longer had the cash for this. Again they were dismissive of her. She was sober at the time she called (verified by biweekly random drug screens) and did not need detox--but she knew she would use again. She was again treated very dismissively by the physician...The whole thing makes me sick--a good treatment for opioid addiction is available, and it was denied her because she didn't have the money for two weeks of detox that she didn't need. The 12-step method is ineffective for most addicts. Prairie View must know this--they are addiction specialists. They took her money, and when it was gone, they denied her further treatment.

Very accommodating to families and visitors. Could be cleaner, more properly trained staff especially when its so very emotional. It was wonderful given the circumstances. My uncle did actually get better and has been doing well for the last 8 years. One of the best things for him was the facility made it very easy for us to visit him.

You felt like the staff generally wanted to help. However, a weakness of the facility was the limited access to outside contact.

It is a great place to get me back in line with my treatment; they have great therapists to get me through. They need a smoking room.

They have caring and intelligent therapists and psychiatrists. They really do care, they helped me with my mental problems, got my meds in order, and I work with a wonderful therapist, psychiatrist, and my regular doctor. The every 30 minute checking when you are trying to sleep is sometimes annoying.

The 30 day program was intense .... and very effective. I visited my child every evening that he was there and learned a lot about their program. The quality of this program and how the patients were taken care of is far beyond the ones offered by the State/county...I assume all quality facilities like this would be expensive, but I don't have other facilities to make a comparison to.
