ABOUT RUTLAND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Rutland Mental Health Services (RMHS) specializes in treating clients at all stages of life who are struggling with mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral disorders. Located in the mountainous town of Rutland, Vt., the facility offers outpatient services, intensive outpatient services (IOP), case management, vocational and housing assistance, medication management, and treatment for co-occurring disorders of mental health and substance abuse. There are specialized programs for women, teens, and the elderly aside from the main program offerings.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

RMHS uses a holistic process to develop life-long abstinence. Clients are set up with an individual care plan (ICP) based on a comprehensive assessment. This plan details the best courses for treatment, and is updated at least once each year. The program utilizes individual, group, and family therapies, as well as offers skills training, symptom management, and crisis planning. Supportive counseling and other aftercare options are available for continued support.

Specifically for adults, therapies are aimed at helping clients attain their goals, and access community resources for better living. Clients also receive psychiatric evaluations as well as information about psychoactive medications to treat behavioral health and co-occurring conditions. According to the facility’s website, eldercare is available as well as 24/7 emergency services.

Treatment involves extensive three-hour counseling sessions on a flexible schedule for outpatients. Group and family sessions focus on addressing the root causes of substance abuse, as well as establishing better relationships. Educational services are also provided to improve relapse prevention efforts.

Additionally, the facility offers employment services and housing assistance for long- and short-term residencies. Transitional living is offered through the Crisis Stabilization and Inpatient Diversion (CSID), which the website says is a “therapeutic community residence.” Supervised living is also provided through RMHS’s Maplewood Recovery Residence.

Clients struggling with a substance abuse disorder may participate in Quitting Time, which is an intensive outpatient program (IOP) consisting of therapy, relapse prevention, and a focus on the 12-step model for abstinence. Participants go to 20 three-hour sessions over the span of five weeks. Aftercare groups for medication management, relapse prevention, and relationship issues are also available.

The Rocking Horse Program is designed specifically for women of all ages, including those pregnant or with children, who are either struggling themselves or living with someone struggling with addiction. Clients attend for two hours each week over 10 weeks. RMHS also offers DUI courses and treatment court which focuses on coordinating legal services, as well as a program for men and women transitioning out of incarceration. The Crash program focuses specifically on helping clients that have had their driving privileges revoked due to DUI’s and related offenses.

The facility also offers outpatient child and family services for those 18 years and younger. Respite services as well as transitional services for those leaving a residential program are available for families with a child or adolescent struggling with a behavioral disorder. Clients can receive treatment in the facility, school, or elsewhere in the community. Children’s Upstream Services (CUPS) provides play-based therapy for children ages six and younger with behavioral or emotional issues. Rutland County Head Start is available for children between ages three and five from low-income households.

Jump on Board for Success (JOBS) helps young adults ages 16 to 21 find employment while developing social and work skills. Additionally, an alternative school is run by RMHS for high-risk youth who need more individualized education on top of intensive treatment. The program combines traditional, experiential, and adventure-based learning.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

RMHS employs a team of 431 staff members who are assisted by volunteers and contracted healthcare providers. The staff includes facilities and administrative professionals working alongside clinical and behavioral health specialists.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from alumni of RMHS at the time of this writing, but the anonymous loved one of a former client gave a mixed review, indicating that staff was helpful but the rules seemed strict. The same respondent gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, family participation, and the staff’s level of training and experience, but just an average three out of five star rating for connectivity, affordability, counseling options, and counselors’ ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

On Google, the facility earned four out of five stars from two reviews to date.[1] Alum Julie wrote: “Wonderful professional organization!!”

FINANCING

Details about pricing are not listed on the facility’s website, but per CiteHealth, the facility accepts Medicaid as well as both state-financed and private insurance. Payment assistance is available on a sliding scale.
