Sabino Recovery Philosophy
Healing Recovery from Trauma and Addiction. Our Sabino Model is a trauma based program which addresses every aspect of what it means to be human. We work with the neurological, physical, social, spiritual and psychological struggles of addiction, depression, anxiety, and PTSD in a truly holistic treatment environment, addressing not only these symptoms, but digging deeper into the core issues of trauma that is driving the unhealthy behavior. When residents arrive, we work together to build the optimum therapy plan. This includes determining what therapies, modalities and activities are best suited to each individual. Our assessment process produces a very carefully crafted, highly- integrated treatment plan so that the healing can begin. Every component of the Sabino Model has been designed, down to the finest detail, with intention. Our model was developed based on the most current clinical research and through the personal clinical experience of Nancy Jarrell O’Donnell, MA, LPC, EAP, CSAT President of Clinical Services and Operations and a co-founder of Sabino Recovery. Nancy’s powerful personal story has informed and inspired her work over many years, leading to the creation of Sabino Recovery, and the Sabino Model. It has also led to a unique ability to understand and empathize with those who have experienced trauma and therefore are suffering with addiction and behavioral issues. Nancy’s unique perspective and qualifications further strengthen the foundation supporting the Sabino Model.
Areas of Specialization
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Eating Disorder Treatment
Many mental health professionals view eating disorders (including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, along with other dysfunctional eating patterns) as a food addiction – in that food is used in ways other than as fuel or a source of pleasure. Some, but not all, addiction treatment programs include eating disorder treatment as part of the service menu. Also, an eating disorder may be a dual-diagnosis or a co-occurring disorder with drug or alcohol addiction.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
Trauma & Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT)
Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT) uses the brain’s innate ability to adapt to change in a healing way, essentially “retraining” the brain to respond differently to familiar memories of trauma or pain.

What you're doing and the knowledge you both have, I would recommend Sabino Recovery to anyone, should they need help in this area. There is clearly no other choice than Sabino Recovery. Please know how much your efforts have been and are appreciated.- J.L.
Just wanted to take a minute and thank you both for such a productive family week. Myself, my Mom and (friend) all feel the experience was invaluable and will live a lifetime in us. So, thank you! You guys are really good at what you do. So much love...- I.A.
For the first time in my life I felt safe. The atmosphere, surroundings and staff allowed me to feel peace amongst the hurt and pain. The love, compassion and empathy have touched my soul in a way I will never forget. Life is challenging at best but now I know there is a group of people that “got me.” I am not cured but I am healing. With a family like this I can do anything!”- Joanie B.
