ABOUT SAMARITAN RECOVERY COMMUNITY, INC.
Based in Nashville, Tenn., the nonprofit Samaritan Recovery Community, Inc. (SCR) operates in partnership with the United Way to provide treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The agency offers a breadth of programming that includes inpatient treatment, a variety of outpatient options, continuing care, supportive housing, programming for family members, and DUI school. Detox services are not available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Following a brief telephone screening, all clients meet with an admissions counselor to determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Clients who require intensive treatment and a high level of structure are typically admitted to the organization’s residential program. New residents are assigned a peer “buddy” and have access to 24-hour staff throughout the duration of their 28-day stay. During the day, residents participate in on-site programming that aims to address each individual’s unique psychological, physical, and emotional needs. In the evenings, clients are transported to local 12-step meetings.
Outpatient treatment, which is available at intensive outpatient (IOP), partial hospitalization (PHP), and standard outpatient levels (OP), is similar in design but less time-intensive. Additionally, clients who have completed treatment and are in the early stages of recovery may apply for housing through Bridgeway Crossings, the agency’s transitional living program. Clients enrolled at Bridgeway Crossings are afforded the independence of apartment-style living while having access to employment support and recovery-related activities.
According to the facility’s website, the staff includes medical personnel, licensed psychiatric nurse practitioners, clinical social workers, licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselors, a psychologist, and a licensed psychological examiner.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Accommodations are straightforward. Clients sleep in twin beds and share modestly furnished bedrooms with one other resident. Meals are served in a communal dining hall, and clients have access to an outdoor recreation area that includes a basketball court, a gazebo, and picnic tables. Telephone use is limited, and family visitation is held every Sunday.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Jimmy, the one alum polled by Rehabs.com, gave his treatment experience five stars and provided positive commentary in his review. “After forty years of using drugs and trying every way to stop and could not, I had lost everything. Samaritan Recovery Community gave me the tools needed to change my life.” He awarded five out of five starts to criteria such as accommodations, meals and nutrition, holistic offerings, staff support, and the quality of group counseling services.
Alumni reviews submitted to third-party sites are also generally positive. On Google, SRC received an average 4.2-star rating out of five based on 5 reviews. Patrick gave his experience five stars and characterized his treatment as comprehensive and thorough. “THE most effective treatment experience in my life…I had experienced a number of prior treatment programs addressing my addiction/ alcoholism; however, it was at Samaritan where I became aware of a larger and more accurate perception of myself,” he wrote.
An anonymous reviewer on CiteHealth noted in the site’s only review that they were “treated with respect,” and Barry, the writer of the only Yellowpages.com review, wrote: “you can tell they care.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Both friends and family members polled by Rehabs.com were generally pleased with the treatment their loved ones received at SMC. One anonymous respondent gave the center’s treatment effectiveness four out of five stars and described the success rate as “moderate” and facilities as “older.” The other anonymous reviewer was more enthusiastic in their review, giving the facility five out of five stars and commenting on the “structured” environment and “lots of meetings and support.” “After completeling the program it's important for patients to continue going to meetings and talking about their problem. SRC did an excellent job of stressing that,” they wrote.
Wayne, a 3-star Google reviewer, liked the program overall, describing it as was “well administered, clean, affordable.” He did take issue with the transitional living program’s lack of flexibility in their policies on employment. “The only drawback I saw was the requirement of employment within two weeks… the two weeks was the day before Christmas to just after New Years when NOBODY was hiring. They kept to the rule and ‘discharged’ our relative at 7pm on a very cold night,” he wrote.
WHAT STAFF SAY
Karen, a former staff member of SRC surveyed by Rehabs.com, found the facility to be comparable to a private treatment center. “It's just the best ...Treatment were as good as it gets. This non-profit, state funded facility was equivalent to some of the best private rehab facilities,” she wrote.
According to the organization’s website, the residential program is priced at $6,000 for 28 days, and intensive outpatient treatment is provided at $50 a session. A 90-day stay in the transitional housing program costs $7,200. Most insurance plans, including TennCare, are accepted, and those without insurance may qualify for government funding.
