Located in Addison, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, Serenity House Counseling Services provides extended residential care, gender-specific sober living homes, and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse. The organization also offers Driving Under the Influence (DUI) services and specialized programming for HIV awareness. Additionally, Serenity House partners with United Way to help ensure each client’s long-term stability and successful transition back into the community.

Serenity House Counseling Services' abstinence-based programs, offered in standard outpatient (OP) and intensive (IOP) options, utilize a variety of treatment modalities. Participants receive both group and individual counseling, and counselors use acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) during sessions. Clients in the IOP attend 20-25 sessions for an average of 5-7 weeks. All participants undergo regular drug testing, and loved ones are encouraged to engage actively in the recovery process.

To enter one of the facility’s sober living homes, individuals must attend an orientation and take a bio-psycho-social assessment. Residents then have five group counseling sessions per week and are expected to gain full-time employment within one week of their admission. Extended residential care, a 90-day program, is on a three-phase system; as clients progress through treatment, they gain more privileges.

The treatment team at Serenity House Counseling Services is overseen by a medical director. The full-time staff includes certified addiction counselors. Serenity House is licensed by the Department of Human Services, Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (DASA) and certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Serenity House maintains a small network of living facilities, some of which have a homelike environment. In total, the organization provides 107 beds for adults seeking treatment. Private rooms are available in the men’s program only, and each private room is outfitted with Wi-Fi and a small refrigerator.

The sober living program is highly structured and comes with a comprehensive set of rules. Residents must adhere to an 11 p.m. curfew (midnight on weekends), and nightly chores are mandatory. Food is provided and a community dinner is served every weeknight. Visitors are allowed during designated hours.
