Rehabs.com Editorial Review
Set amidst parks and nature centers in a comfortable, woodsy part of Madison, Wis., Tellurian is a nonprofit agency that addresses substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues for adult men and women. Programming is gender-specific, and treatment is available at both inpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels.
Medical detox services are available at the agency’s Detoxification Center at 2914 Industrial Drive, a short drive from the main campus.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The facility’s 29-bed medical detox facility is a first step for many Tellurian clients. Registered nurses and a board-certified physician who specializes in addictionology supervise round-the-clock detox, which is typically completed in 72 hours or less. Next, state certified counselors meet with each client to determine an optimal and appropriate entry point to treatment.
On the main campus, residential treatment programming takes place for up to 90 days. Beyond individual and group therapy and optional 12-step NA and AA meetings, residential treatment takes quite a holistic approach, attempting to feature something for everyone. As such, residents are engaged in yoga, expressive arts, canoeing, as well as spiritual care groups, and have access to counseling for anger management, domestic violence, and mental health issues. The multi-faceted program is further augmented by a range of evidence-based treatment modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, and addiction and cravings groups.
With capacity limited to eight participants per session, IOP is designed especially for clients who may require more intensive treatment than that of traditional outpatient programming. Master’s level therapists who specialize in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders lead four-hour morning and evening sessions four days a week. IOP participants also receive an hour of one-on-one counseling per week, and families may arrange for family sessions.
Tellurian also works with The University of Wisconsin-Madison to provide two-part addiction education courses, available in both the afternoons and evenings.
Tellurian is directed by an M.D. who has more than 25 years of experience in addiction treatment and education. The facility also employs a consulting psychiatrist, master’s- and Ph.D.-level clinical supervisors, and a nurse practitioner.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Residents of Tellurian’s main campus are encouraged to take advantage of the adjacent Aldo Leopold Nature Center that sits on 110 acres of conservancy land. Male and female participants of the residential program are housed in separate areas with separate common areas, though treatment remains much the same for each sex.
