The Center for Professional Excellence Philosophy
The Center for Professional Excellence is a pioneer in helping impaired professionals recover their lives, their passions, and their integrity from the effects of addiction, depression, anxiety, and other behavioral problems. Since 1996, CPE’s compassionate and gifted staff has dedicated itself to helping heal professional men who are trapped in cycles of addictions and destructive behaviors so they can utilize and fulfill their gifts, skills, and character.
Areas of Specialization
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

ABOUT THE CENTER FOR PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE
Founded in 1996, the Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) offers residential treatment for professional men who are struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis; the organization defines “professional” as “one who contributes to society in order to make it better,” a definition that includes professions as diverse as singers, surgeons, pastors, and politicians. The facility is in a quiet neighborhood near the Nashville Zoo. Detox is not available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment uses the 12-Steps along with a proprietary program called the Spiritual Root System, which “exposes the five roots of the human heart”: feelings, needs, desire, longing, and hope. The center also espouses a Christian belief system that involves interpreting human emotions as the call of God.
CPE offers a thorough evaluation program that lasts 3.5 days and includes several individual interviews, a psychiatric evaluation, psychological tests, and a review of the client’s health and medical background.
The center’s main program is a residential program lasting 42–84 days, which combines daily group therapy with 12-step work, intensive marriage and family therapy, individual treatment, and education. All graduating clients leave with a comprehensive aftercare plan.
There is also a six-week relapse program, for clients who have already completed a course of treatment and subsequently suffered a relapse. The program is designed to improve the individual’s support systems and provide further intensive marriage and family therapy. In some cases, clients who have suffered relapse may be encouraged to complete the primary residential treatment program instead of the relapse program.
CPE has a staff-to-client ratio of 1:2 and was founded by a PhD-level counselor. The team includes a licensed professional counselor who’s also a pastor, and a marriage and family therapist. Both the alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date on the level of training found in counselors and the level of support received from staff gave five stars in each category.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The center accommodates no more than 10 clients at a time, who reside in a gated community. Both the alumni polled to date on the center’s cleanliness and accommodations gave CPE four or five out of five stars in both categories.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Of the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date, two gave very positive feedback, and one, very negative. The two individuals polled on the center’s offerings in a variety of areas — who happened to be the two positive reviewers — gave the center four or five stars in most metrics relating to the core program and treatment; for instance, the overall quality of the center’s individual and group counseling and the level of support received from its staff received high ratings. One of these otherwise positive reviewers gave the center just one out of five stars for its holistic options, and the other declined to rate this category at all. Nevertheless, alum Tom wrote: “Excellent treatment center!”
Fellow alum B.S., who did not complete a more extensive survey, wrote that the center had done him more harm than good. “This program is run by a group of fundamentalist Christian... [Staff unprofessional]. Very little is offered for the excessively high cost,” he told Rehabs.com.
At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded no coverage of this facility.
The center requires payment upfront, but will file an insurance claim for clients if desirable. CPE does not publish its treatment costs online.
