ABOUT THE LOVELADY CENTER

Inspired by the Founder’s own brush with the law in 2004 –– and her subsequent exposure to the “revolving door” phenomenon inside the prison system –– The Lovelady Center (TLC) began as a prison Bible study group and has since developed into a faith-based shelter and rehab program. The stated mission of the Lovelady Center is to empower women from all walks of life to become fully functioning members of society and women of God.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Although the long-term rehab serves women who have been involved in the criminal justice system and aims to prevent re-incarceration, women who have struggled with homelessness, addiction, or domestic abuse also find shelter here. Deemed as a “Whole Way House,” TLC provides women with nine to 12 months of substance abuse counseling, self-esteem building, and practical life skills training in areas like budgeting and parenting.

“Loveladies” receive three meals a day, clothing and hygiene products, medical care, substance abuse counseling, and on-site childcare. Through its partnership with Judson College, the program offers women the opportunity to take classes and learn job skills. The Workforce Development Program helps women find stable employment, thus facilitating and deepening their sense of self-sufficiency.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, apart from the fact that the program relies heavily upon volunteers. The Center’s founder remains today as the Executive Director, and her story was recounted in a bestselling biography, “Miss Brenda and the Loveladies.”

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Since having opened its doors, the facility has grown to serve over 450 women and children at a time. Transportation services are provided 24 hours a day.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Reviews from a group of 10 former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com to date are mixed, with overall ratings high on treatment effectiveness, but low on cleanliness and maintenance. Some women highlighted the respect they received from “supportive” staff, while others considered treatment helpful insofar as women were open to it. “They offer the help you need if you want it. They can help you find a job,” alum Detra commented. Susan, another alum, called the aftercare program “awesome,” adding: “The love and support during and after the program is outstanding.”

Recurring criticism focused on the facility itself, with alumni reporting bed bug issues and poor food quality, amongst other issues. “This place needs [to be] fixed,” wrote D.M.S. Others, such as alum G.T., felt that women were given too much freedom, which they claimed eventually lead to trust issues down the line, though alum Pamela felt very much the opposite. “It feels like you are a prisoner there,” she explained.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Like alumni, the group of four loved ones shared various levels of satisfaction with the program. In a Rehabs.com survey, C.S., a parent, expressed their disappointment with her daughter’s residential experience, noting that, while she “wished she could have stayed,” the unlocked facility made it difficult to keep patients in. “She was able to get out of facility in the night without anyone knowing. feel like there should be better rules on how to make sure your patient is in their rooms in the night,” explained C.S.

Another reviewer noted the programs “strong faith based, wonderful counseling” but noted TLC’s need for “more financial backing, and a bigger facility.”

FINANCING

As a nonprofit, The Lovelady Center is funded through its two thrifts stores, as well as donations from individuals, foundations, and churches.

The work with you, but they keep you from doing things and do not let you communicate with outside people but for certain times. Of you want to leave without seeking treament they don't try to change your mind and explain you can do better

I can say i was there for quite awhile. Very Christian based, that is for sure a PLUS. Met some wonderful women there. The women that made mistakes, non positive drug screens but other, were kicked out instead of truly working with that indiv. i feel that po;icy should be looked it. Too much freedom in and out. But then these women earn trust. Overall the owners wonderful wonderful people. But center is dirty, huge program with beg bugs. Instead of spending money on some things bring in more counsling, thses women need weekly counsling. ........2014-2015

The love and support during and after the program is outstanding. The facility also alliws children. This facility is for women and children and they also assist with other issues a person may have due to their addiction such as helping women get custody if children and any other legal issues. The aftercare program is awesome they help with housing and employment. They also have an SRP program alliwing women to be released from prison early into the program with support of the DOC.

The facility is a faith based facility. It feels like you are a prisoner there. I just think that there are a lot of ways to help an addict that were never covered while I was there.

Wished she could have stayed; she was there 30 days. I felt as though there was insufficient security and feel like there should have been better rules. On mothers' day we got to visit, only because of holiday.
