The Meadows Philosophy

We believe that successful treatment combines powerful and unique methodologies that enable support, discovery and healing. Since each patient comes to The Meadows with a story, our staff works to create unique patient treatment plans that combine multiple therapies to unlock the greatest potential for healing and growth.

Areas of Specialization

  • Process Abuse Treatment
Not all addictions involve mood-altering chemicals. The term “process addiction” describes the unhealthy use of behaviors (including eating, gambling, sexual activity, shopping, internet use, etc.) that has spiraled out of control and into the realm of addiction.

  • Individual Therapy
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.

Facility Highlights

Signature Survivor's Week workshop helps patients explore the origins of self-defeating behaviors that result in addiction, mood disorders and trouble relationships.

Experts in treating patients with acute, complex, and co-occuring disorders.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Equine Therapy, Expressive Arts, Yoga, Tai Chi, Acupuncture and Mindfulness Meditation.

ABOUT THE MEADOWS

Located in Wickenburg, Ariz., on 14 acres of land in the Sonoran Desert, The Meadows offers trauma-informed treatment for individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The center’s programming includes detox, inpatient treatment, and outpatient care. Additionally, treatment for process addictions, like gambling and sex addictions, is also available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, all clients participate in a routine screening process designed to identify any medical or mental health conditions that may warrant a referral to another facility. Initial evaluations also help determine each client’s individualized treatment plan.

The Meadows uses a variety of therapies to address addiction and its relationship to trauma. Programming draws upon 12-step principles and incorporates individual, group, and family counseling. Modalities include eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), expressive arts therapy, equine therapy, neurobehavioral therapy, and somatic experiencing, which is a technique designed to address post-traumatic stress disorder. Clients also receive spiritual counseling and guidance on nutrition, overall wellness, and mindfulness.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Meadows’ multidisciplinary treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, master’s level therapists, a mental health nurse practitioner, and a 24-hour nursing staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Meadows’ campus is in a secluded area about 50 miles outside of Phoenix. The facility can house up to 82 residents at a time. Clients share rooms and have access to an on-site fitness center, swimming pool, and daily yoga classes. No phones or computers are allowed on campus, but there is a shared TV in the common area. Clients are allowed guest visits after two weeks of treatment.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni reviews sourced by Rehabs.com are generally positive; six surveyed alumni, when asked how likely they were to recommend the facility to others, provided an average rating of 4.83 out of five stars. The evaluated categories that received the highest ratings among alumni include the staff’s level of training and experience, the program’s counseling options, the facility’s cleanliness, and the program’s family participation elements, which received respective ratings of 4.83, 4.67, 4.83, and 4.67 out of five stars, respectively. “They helped me identify what my real issues were unlike all of the other facilities that just wanted to stabilize my addiction,” S.E. wrote in their five-star review. The program’s holistic options and exercise and leisure offerings also received above average ratings. “Not typical 12 step, they treat the root cause of why addictions exist and not just the addiction,” A.U. wrote.

One common source of criticism among alumni was the center’s affordability, which received the lowest rating of 2.75 stars. Multiple alumni felt that treatment was too expensive. Kathleen, who gave the program’s treatment effectiveness five stars, noted that the “Cost can be a barrier to some who can benefit.” Another alum felt that counselors were not properly trained to treat individuals who identified as LGBTQ.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones polled by Rehabs.com provided above average ratings in most categories, though some respondents left negative commentary in their reviews. The five friends and family members polled by Rehabs.com provided an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars when asked how likely they were to recommend the facility to others.

Multiple loved ones felt that the discharge process and aftercare offerings were lacking. “They didn't Evaulate him well enough to see that he needed longer aftercare and encouraged him that he could just go home after 45 days …They didn't educate him on the risk of overdose with relapse,” E. wrote regarding the care their brother received. Karen was also disappointed with the center’s approach to aftercare. “No follow up care! Spouse was not motivated to succeed and was unsuccessful in changing behavior in the long term once program ended,” she wrote in a one-star review.

Despite these criticisms, all evaluated categories received above average ratings from surveyed loved ones. The program’s exercise and leisure offerings, counseling options, and family participation all earned ratings of 4.4 out of five stars, and the staff’s level of training and experience received a rating of 4.6 out of five stars. “My husband is bi-polar. They first took him off all meds and started from scratch. The psychiatrist got the right mix on the first try!” one survey respondent wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The one staff member polled by Rehabs.com had positive things to say about the facility and its offerings. This anonymous survey respondent noted the high cost, but characterized the staff as “excellent” and the treatment as “comprehensive.”

FINANCING

The average cost of treatment at The Meadows is $54,000 a month. The center accepts plans from most major insurance providers, and self-pay options are also available.

I was very disappointed in the after care follow up of this facility. My son finished the treatment, the staff recommended further half way house treatment (which my son chose not to do), and he had a relapse relatively quickly. I do not blame the meadows for that....But I tried reaching his primary therapist to have a discussion about follow up treatment....sent two emails, and left two voice mails...and even emailed my power of attorney as a parent which allowed the Meadows to discuss the situation....and I never got any response of any kind.....Very unprofessional. So we sent him to a different facility. In general I was pleased with the program, but very disappointed in lack of after care when my son needed it most.

Survivors workshop was amazing. A downside was that my primary counselor ended up getting fired because she was inept. Very expensive but was the best experience of my life. I made great connections with my peers and learned a lot about myself.

The medical attention i recieved here was extremely lacking. I feel like the staffs communication was a mess. I had to beg to see Dr.Denicole several times but was not seen by him. I was extremely dissapointed as someone with additional medical problems. Others who suffered medical problems reported the same dissapointment with the medical staff. I would warn others with medical conditions of this problem as it was extremely frusterating and took away from the overall affectiveness of my stay here. However the program seems to be effective otherwise.

My child was an inpatient at the Meadows for 44 days and released 12 hours early on the basis of the social workers. The Physician was not notified and orders had not been written- very haphazard in discharge planning and follow up. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING and professional at the end. The Psychiatrist was apologetic at how the situation was handled. It too was brought to our attention that one of the primary counselors (who had not attended one meeting with the family group) is MARRIED to the behavioral tech in the male dorm. This was never disclosed and information was found to be shared between the two. Also, we were told the treatment is only 45 days- NOT TRUE. Tricare has a contract and military veterans (whom we have the greatest respect for) are often there only 3-5 weeks depending on the contract; Therefore alterations are made in the house, group setting and the treatment plan. This can affect the other members as they are on two different programs and come and go sooner. This should be disclosed and it is not.

Don't go here if you are LGBTQ - you will be told that anything other that straightness is caused by trauma and a sign of sexual addiction. Many staff very unprofessional - one of them cried when I told her I was gay because she was "psychic" and could sense the trauma that had caused my gayness. They won't try to pray away your gay or anything and the other patients certainly did not hold those outdated attitudes, but it's what many of the staff believe and it has a negative impact on treatment if you're out. Speaking of the treatment... Yes it's gorgeous there and the food is good, but their "all addictions are caused by trauma" model - it's right there on their website is narrow minded and can be detrimental to patients who do not have early childhood trauma.

The owner has created a very successful business model and a strong brand. Her philosophy is based on everyone was not properly nurtured by their parents and that is the root cause of all problems. Staff is trained under that same philosophy. Everyone will receive the same root cause of their problem, because it is a one size fits all philosophy. From there a specific diagnosis is formed. My ex-wife was a patient. I was diagnosed before they ever met me based on input from their patient. My ex-wife bought all the books and bought into the philosophy. The after care result was a divorce, negative impact on our children, and a patient who still suffered from mood disorders as before, but now had the vocabulary and belief that she was in an active recovery program. However, other than a broken family, nothing had changed. Five years later, myself and the children now understand her mental illness and have recovered from the trauma of the divorce. She is now alone and continues to suffer with the same issues. You are paying for the brand, but don't expect real life changing results.

My brother died within about a month of leaving the meadows. He died of an overdose. They didn't Evaulate him well enough to see that he needed longer aftercare and encouraged him that he could just go home after 45 days and NA would be enough. The staff did a horrible job and was completely fooled by him. They didn't educate him on the risk of overdose with relapse and the high death rate associated with relapse.

All masters level clinicians and above, full time MD, psychiatrists, focus is on treating the whole person. Able to treat co occurring disorders not just say they do. Beautiful atmosphere and supportive community. Many different testaments available, truly individualized. I guess the rooms could be more posh if that's what is most important for you. I didn't always like the food but it was healthy. This really is the best place for treatment. I've tried others and they never offered enough to help my entire person recover. It's a great place to save your life if you're willing. This experience changed my entire life experience and I couldn't be more grateful.

Absolutely critical to make sure program fits the patients needs (based on level of severity) & quality of care. The expertise of the staff was excellent; I would highly recommend the facility. Must reiterate importance of an aftercare program so patients learn how to function in society without substances.

Waste of money. Taught my husband his acting out sexually all caused by his childhood trauma which maybe true but they didn't help him move past or even the importance of making amends with spouse. ... Everything is about the sex addict and having them remove their guilt. There is no accountability. My husband came out more self centered and arrogant than when he went in. He justified it by saying he was traumatized. What about the trauma he caused to his loved ones?

They have the ability to deal w individuals struggling w one or multiple serious & life threatening addictions. Program is very thorough but only works if individual seeking treatment truly wants to be helped. They need to ensure patient is a aware of importance of having an aftercare program lined-up immediately upon being discharged from facility. The Meadows was the only rehab facility that worked for my brother.

Beware when aftercare plans are made with your family present during family week. You may get sabotaged. Be very clear with your therapist making a solid plan that you can agree to before meeting to discuss aftercare with your therapist. The after care planners do nothing to set up after care. You will likely be on your own setting that up. Know that rarely is going home after your 45v day treatment EVER recommended.

The Meadows saved my life, I was 5 years sober and they helped me with core family issues that would have been a threat to that sobriety. More is sometimes required through our sober journey if we are to continue maintaining emotional sobriety...Cost can be a barrier to some who can benefit...The work done at The Meadows is as profound as that done by the founding members of A.A.

Staff is overly eager to assign a diagnosis despite not meeting criteria. I was traumatized by others heartbreaking traumatic life events. Substandard support for chemical dependency treatment. Very disappointed in staffs use of stereotypes and failure to see the individual. Therapy sessions were rigid, overly structured, tended to favor time spent on same individuals every session. There are far better places for less expense.

The counselors were amazing. The program was top notch. They did not just try to cram 12 steps down your throat. They went far beyond that trying to get to the root of the issues and break me from my cycle. The 12 steps were introduced too, but I had been to 2 rehabs before that this is all they focused on and it was ineffective.
