Areas of Specialization
Process Abuse Treatment
Not all addictions involve mood-altering chemicals. The term “process addiction” describes the unhealthy use of behaviors (including eating, gambling, sexual activity, shopping, internet use, etc.) that has spiraled out of control and into the realm of addiction.
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.

ABOUT THE MEADOWS
Located in Wickenburg, Ariz., on 14 acres of land in the Sonoran Desert, The Meadows offers trauma-informed treatment for individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The center’s programming includes detox, inpatient treatment, and outpatient care. Additionally, treatment for process addictions, like gambling and sex addictions, is also available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, all clients participate in a routine screening process designed to identify any medical or mental health conditions that may warrant a referral to another facility. Initial evaluations also help determine each client’s individualized treatment plan.
The Meadows uses a variety of therapies to address addiction and its relationship to trauma. Programming draws upon 12-step principles and incorporates individual, group, and family counseling. Modalities include eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), expressive arts therapy, equine therapy, neurobehavioral therapy, and somatic experiencing, which is a technique designed to address post-traumatic stress disorder. Clients also receive spiritual counseling and guidance on nutrition, overall wellness, and mindfulness.
The Meadows’ multidisciplinary treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, master’s level therapists, a mental health nurse practitioner, and a 24-hour nursing staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The Meadows’ campus is in a secluded area about 50 miles outside of Phoenix. The facility can house up to 82 residents at a time. Clients share rooms and have access to an on-site fitness center, swimming pool, and daily yoga classes. No phones or computers are allowed on campus, but there is a shared TV in the common area. Clients are allowed guest visits after two weeks of treatment.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Alumni reviews sourced by Rehabs.com are generally positive; six surveyed alumni, when asked how likely they were to recommend the facility to others, provided an average rating of 4.83 out of five stars. The evaluated categories that received the highest ratings among alumni include the staff’s level of training and experience, the program’s counseling options, the facility’s cleanliness, and the program’s family participation elements, which received respective ratings of 4.83, 4.67, 4.83, and 4.67 out of five stars, respectively. “They helped me identify what my real issues were unlike all of the other facilities that just wanted to stabilize my addiction,” S.E. wrote in their five-star review. The program’s holistic options and exercise and leisure offerings also received above average ratings. “Not typical 12 step, they treat the root cause of why addictions exist and not just the addiction,” A.U. wrote.
One common source of criticism among alumni was the center’s affordability, which received the lowest rating of 2.75 stars. Multiple alumni felt that treatment was too expensive. Kathleen, who gave the program’s treatment effectiveness five stars, noted that the “Cost can be a barrier to some who can benefit.” Another alum felt that counselors were not properly trained to treat individuals who identified as LGBTQ.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Loved ones polled by Rehabs.com provided above average ratings in most categories, though some respondents left negative commentary in their reviews. The five friends and family members polled by Rehabs.com provided an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars when asked how likely they were to recommend the facility to others.
Multiple loved ones felt that the discharge process and aftercare offerings were lacking. “They didn't Evaulate him well enough to see that he needed longer aftercare and encouraged him that he could just go home after 45 days …They didn't educate him on the risk of overdose with relapse,” E. wrote regarding the care their brother received. Karen was also disappointed with the center’s approach to aftercare. “No follow up care! Spouse was not motivated to succeed and was unsuccessful in changing behavior in the long term once program ended,” she wrote in a one-star review.
Despite these criticisms, all evaluated categories received above average ratings from surveyed loved ones. The program’s exercise and leisure offerings, counseling options, and family participation all earned ratings of 4.4 out of five stars, and the staff’s level of training and experience received a rating of 4.6 out of five stars. “My husband is bi-polar. They first took him off all meds and started from scratch. The psychiatrist got the right mix on the first try!” one survey respondent wrote.
WHAT STAFF SAY
The one staff member polled by Rehabs.com had positive things to say about the facility and its offerings. This anonymous survey respondent noted the high cost, but characterized the staff as “excellent” and the treatment as “comprehensive.”
The average cost of treatment at The Meadows is $54,000 a month. The center accepts plans from most major insurance providers, and self-pay options are also available.
