Areas of Specialization

Reid Lofgran

Medical Director

Dr. Lofgran makes all the medical decisions for the residents at the Center. Upon admission, vital signs are monitored and a Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment (CIWA) is completed if necessary. After the initial evaluation, any necessary medications are placed in lockup and are taken by the resident under the supervision of a member of the treatment team. The resident enters treatment activities as soon as initial assessment is completed, during the first day of residency. Laboratory work is available, if indicated by medical assessment. Additional medical care will be given according to individual needs. These services are optional and it is the patient's responsibility to pay for them.

ABOUT THE WALKER CENTER

Set in the agricultural, southern Idaho village of Gooding, The Walker Center has provided residential substance abuse treatment to adult men and women since 1976. Treatment typically lasts 28 days, and medically monitored detox services are offered on-site. Outpatient services are available at the center’s location in Twin Falls.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Walker Center’s residential program combines 12-step methodology with evidence-based practices such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Experiential-based therapies, such as yoga and an outdoor challenge course are also incorporated into the curriculum.

Upon admission, clients undergo a medical evaluation which consists of a physical and discussion of the individual’s history. Medications are prescribed if needed and additional medical care, such as teeth cleanings and eye exams, may be recommended.

Treatment services include group therapy, one-on-one counseling, and medication management (if needed). Men and women participate in separate programs and are discouraged from interacting with each other.

The Walker Center also offers a comprehensive family program that involves group therapy and education based on the disease model of addiction.

Aftercare includes referrals to 12-step groups, additional psychologists, and other contacts in the recovery community. Those who complete treatment are allowed to participate in the Alumni Support Group for free.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Led by a medical director who is certified as an addictionologist, the treatment team consists primarily of certified alcohol and drug counselors as well as licensed practical nurses (LPN) and licensed clinical social workers (LCSW).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Men and women live in dorm-style rooms on gender-specific wings of the 46-bed residential facility. Community areas are filled with comfortable seating and reading material. The campus is smoke free and all forms of tobacco are prohibited. Additionally, cell phones are not allowed though residents have access to a pay phone. Laundry is free and there is a dress code to discourage inappropriate outfits.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni reviews of the residential facility are mostly positive, highlighting effective treatment and competent staff. Among the six alumni polled on the following metrics at the time of this writing, exercise and leisure options received an average of 3.7 stars, holistic offerings received 3.2 stars, family participation received 4.2 stars, affordability received 3.3 stars, and when asked whether they would recommend the facility, collectively the alumni gave 4.5 out of five stars.

B.W. gave The Walker Center high marks across the board, telling Rehabs.com: “This was more than I expected and I will forever be grateful.”

Mark told Rehabs.com, “The time management they enforced was awesome and the staff was great. They incorporated family very well as well, and they provided great one on one time,” however, he also noted that “there was not a lot of free time and they needed more to eat.”

An anonymous alum told CiteHealth: “I have nothing but good things to say about The Walker Center. Their staff is knowledgeable and truly care about their clients. The Walker Center helped me to take control over my addiction and learn life skills that have enabled me to start my life over.”[1]

Z.L., however, gave low ratings for both treatment and the accommodations and wrote to Rehabs.com, “I never felt like the staff cared about you they were just there to do a job...plus the price is outrageous for the level of care they provide you with.” A five-star review from alum, S.L.D. iterates the same but expresses that “there was a lot of connectivity in the facility.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Reviews from loved ones are mixed. Laura called the treatment team “caring and friendly,” and told Rehabs.com that she liked the family weekend. Yet she also noted: “Not a lot of holistic/alternatives to 12 steps. Not much follow up on patients.”

And Laurie told Rehabs.com: “Very good counselors, although they need more family counselors. Religion was a downfall of the facility.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, The Walker Center accepts a variety of insurance plans.

I had a bad experience with another provider and Walker Center was the only other choice covered by my insurance.

The facility has excellent customer service and is extremely willing to help you! They make you feel welcome and accepted for who you are. The price was a little higher than desired, but worth it for the treatment. The facility is extremely compassionate and helpful in every way when it comes to achieving your own personal goals. They truly want what's best for you and are willing to give advice and treatment that works for you rather than just prescribing random things.

This was a horrible treatment center!! I personally went through it and you are just a number there, I never felt like the staff cared about you they were just there to do a job. No aftercare options do they provide you with either. 28 days residential is just not enough for most people I've known myself and a handful of othera that have went through all have the same opinion and have relapsed. I just finished a 90 day residential treatment and did 120 day stay and am now in a transitional program they offer and the Walker Center doesn't even come close to it. I for once in my life have a desire to be sober and live a life worth living. I would not recommend the Walker Center to anyone trying to stay sober, plus the price is outrageous for the level of care they provide you with. The facility is nice though, if they would get new therapists and staff and make it longer they could go somewhere.

I liked the family weekend. Would like to see more post-rehab options in Boise. Would also like to see options for relapses, like in my ex-husbands case. He was on his own . Caring and friendly staff but not a lot of holistic/alternatives to 12 steps. Not much follow up on patients.

Support but not enough one on one.

They offer tools for recovery, counseling, and require a 12 step program in conjunction with their treatment facility. Strengths: Outpatient and relapse prevention. Weaknesses: No residential treatment facility in Boise.

They are a very positive facility and that was an awesome party. I felt that them keeping men and woman separate was a downfall.
