Townsend Recovery Center Philosophy
Townsend offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services, throughout eight addiction facilities located across South Louisiana, based on the needs of each patient. The Townsend Recovery Center, located in Scott, LA near Lafayette, is a residential detox and residential treatment facility offering a private addiction recovery atmosphere. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission.
Townsend treatment also offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase at seven additional facilities, which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.
Areas of Specialization
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
It has brought my family and me closer, allowing us to do things together without our attention being centered on my using.

Townsend operates eight outpatient and residential facilities throughout the state of Louisiana. The Townsend Recovery Center, located eight miles northwest of Lafayette in Scott, La., offers detox, residential care, and outpatient programs for addiction and co-occurring disorders.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment begins with a thorough medical and psychosocial evaluation, which takes into account the nature and length of addiction as well stressors in life that could be contributing to the addiction. The residential program lasts 90 days.
This facility uses their own treatment method called, The Townsend Way, which is founded on the belief that addiction is a disease of the brain. Successful treatment depends on addressing root causes of the addiction with an emphasis on genetic causes. The center’s official website notes that treatment includes individual and group therapy, a weekly family night, education about substance abuse, cognitive testing, and training in chronic disease management.
Outpatient care includes intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) and general outpatient programming, all of which is available in the daytime or the evening.
Aftercare provisions consist of a weekly continuing care group and an alumni association.
This center’s medical director is a psychiatrist and, according to Townsend’s website, clients are monitored 24/7 by nursing staff. The staff-to-client ratio is 1:2.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The facility has a swimming pool on-site where water aerobics and aqua therapy are offered as recreational and fitness therapy.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, there has been one alum polled by Rehabs.com. The respondent provided mixed feedback regarding the facility. The alum, who listed their initials as N.F.L., gave the facility three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, five stars for accommodations & amenities, and one star for meals & nutrition. N.F.L. strongly agreed that the facility was clean and well maintained and was neutral regarding the affordability of the facility. For all other metrics polled on, the alum responded negatively to the questions asked and indicated that there were not many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; that the facility was not adequately equipped or staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; and that the facility staff were not experienced or well-trained. N.F.L. did not list any strengths of the facility and felt that the facility could improve upon the friendliness and support from staff members. He wrote, “People work there are mean, hateful, not considerate of patients feelings, just plain rude, not kind, not understanding.” The alum responded that he would not recommend the facility to a friend or loved one considering rehab.
On the facility’s Facebook page, which it can manage, there is an overall rating of 3.8 out of five stars based on 29 total reviews.1 The reviews left on the page were mixed. One alum, M.B., who gave one star, strongly urged others not to attend the facility. She wrote, “This place is a terrible scam and will just get you addicted to another drug. Do yourself a favor and don't go here.” M.J.R, a a client at the time of the review in October, 2014, did not agree with that viewpoint. She gave five stars and wrote, “I attend here now and I love it.”
