Townsend Recovery Center Philosophy
Townsend offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services, throughout eight addiction facilities located across South Louisiana, based on the needs of each patient. The Townsend Recovery Center, located in Scott, LA near Lafayette, is a residential detox and residential treatment facility offering a private addiction recovery atmosphere. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission.
Townsend treatment also offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase at seven additional facilities, which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.
Areas of Specialization
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
It has brought my family and me closer, allowing us to do things together without our attention being centered on my using.

ABOUT TOWNSEND RECOVERY CENTER — SCOTT
Townsend operates eight outpatient and residential facilities throughout the state of Louisiana. The Scott center, located eight miles northwest of Lafayette, offers detox, residential care, and outpatient programs for addiction and co-occurring disorders.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Treatment begins with a thorough medical and psychosocial evaluation, which takes into account the nature and length of addiction, and any environmental and situational stressors, among other things. The residential program lasts 90 days.
This facility uses a proprietary treatment method known as The Townsend Way, which is founded on the belief that addiction is a brain disease, and that successful treatment depends on addressing its root causes, with an emphasis on its genetic causes. Though the facility does not give extensive details about its treatment program, the center’s official website notes that treatment includes individual and group therapy, a weekly family night, education about substance abuse, cognitive testing, and training in chronic disease management.
Outpatient care includes intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) and general outpatient programming, all of which is available in the daytime or the evening.
Aftercare provisions consist of a weekly continuing care group and an alumni association.
This center’s medical director is a psychiatrist, and according to Townsend’s website, clients are monitored 24/7 by medical staff. The staff-to-client ratio is 1:2.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
There’s a swimming pool on-site, where water aerobics and aqua therapy are offered as recreational and fitness therapy.
Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, affiliated friends or family members, or staff, however, at the time of this writing, secondary reviews sites yielded some coverage. On Facebook (where Townsend manages its own page), the center has received two perfect five-star ratings; but on Yelp, the center has received a single one star rating. “To all addicts still suffering: This place is a miracle, it saved my life. Miracles really happen here… To the Fletcher's and all staff: Thank you for everything and for putting up with me and saving my life. I will never forget any of y'all,” Brandon wrote on Facebook. The other Facebook review included a glowing report from a staff member.
On Yelp, however, alum David complained of medical difficulties during detox, and wrote: “This place is horrible.”
According to the center’s website, Townsend is contracted with most HMOs, health insurance plans, and arranged care companies. The center’s website particularly notes a relationship with Blue Cross Blue Shield. The website also notes that financing is available and that cash and credit cards are accepted.
