Townsend Treatment Centers Philosophy
Townsend offers a spectrum of innovative rehabilitation services, throughout eight addiction facilities located across South Louisiana, based on the needs of each patient. Patients are treated with encouragement and respect by blending high quality addiction therapy with compassionate counseling in a safe recovery environment. The core philosophy at Townsend is that addiction is a chronic brain disease that can be managed or put in “remission.” Using The Townsend Way their team strives to help both patients and loved ones heal from their addictions and enjoy an improved quality of life. Once the patient’s acute medical condition has stabilized, The Townsend Way offers a unique, effective, and long-term plan to keep his or her addiction in remission.
Townsend treatment offers an intensive outpatient therapy (IOP) phase which varies in length according to the patient’s needs. After completing this IOP phase, Townsend provides former patients with continuing care via enrollment in their optional chronic disease management plan to keep their disease in remission.
Areas of Specialization
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.

ABOUT TOWNSEND – COVINGTON
Part of the Louisiana-based Townsend treatment network, Townsend of Covington provides outpatient-based detoxification and intensive outpatient programs for individuals struggling with chemical dependency. The Covington facility, located in southeast Louisiana, also offers treatment for sex addiction, overeating, and compulsive gambling.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the center’s website, Townsend’s approach to treatment is designed to address the underlying causes of addiction, namely the effect that substances have on the reward centers of the brain.
Before beginning treatment, clients take a substance abuse assessment to assist clinicians in forming an individualized plan of care. The facility also offers genetic testing, which may help identify the biological factors contributing to addictive behavior.
Clients participate in group therapy, as well as attend educational classes on substance abuse. Medication-assisted therapy (i.e. Suboxone and naltrexone) may be recommended for individuals recovering from opioid dependency. To accommodate client schedules, the Covington location offers both day and evening sessions.
Family participation in treatment is highly recommended, and a family night is held weekly for ongoing education, counseling, and support. Townsend also offers support for individuals with a chronic disease.
The center’s website indicates if a person successfully completes the 90-day inpatient treatment program, the center guarantees they will stay sober. If someone doesn’t stay sober, they are able to return for a complimentary 30 day treatment.
Townsend of Covington’s website states the center employs a team of psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, case managers, and phlebotomists for medical testing.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The one loved one who was polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided three stars for family involvement and four stars for the experience of the counselors, but only two stars for treatment effectiveness. “This facility was perfectly adequate,” they said, but added: “My loved one is an addict and her time in this facility did not rehabilitate her.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
The only review submitted to Rehabs.com from an employee at the time of this writing questioned the facility’s financial motives. The reviewer praised the quality of some counselors, but admitted: “Some have no interests in saving people from addiction but rather in deceiving desperate people and taking their money.”
Townsend of Covington accepts a range of private insurance plans to cover the cost of treatment, according to the facility’s website. Patients are responsible for co-payments and deductibles, and financing may be available to qualified clients.
