ABOUT VITALITY ACTIONS
Founded in 1971 and partly funded by Southern Nevada’s Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Agency (SAPTA), Vitality Unlimited is an addiction treatment nonprofit. Vitality ACTIONS (short for Adolescents Committed to Independence, Opportunity and a New Start), one of the organization’s three residential substance abuse treatment facilities, offers residential treatment for adolescents aged 12 to 17 who are struggling with substance abuse and a dual diagnosis. Pregnant women and intravenous drug users are given priority treatment. Medical detox does not appear to be offered on-site.
Residential treatment for adults as well as adolescent outpatient treatment is available at separate facilities.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The facility’s website states that treatment is holistic, and Rehabs.com reviews indicated that the center follows the 12-Steps. The length of treatment varies according to the client’s needs.
Treatment begins with an assessment; where appropriate, this is carried out by a mental health professional who can also assess potential mental health disorders.
The backbone of treatment is individual and group counseling. Working toward the goal of promoting responsibility, self-reliance, competency, and a sense of the importance of the family, among other values, these treatment modalities are supplemented by life-skills training, peer assessment, experiential learning, goal setting, anger management classes, relapse prevention, and a focus on self-growth and respect for self and others. GED classes and continued educational classes are provided on-site. Clients also each receive a personalized continuing care plan.
According to the facility’s website, the center is staffed 24 hours a day by a team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff, rehabilitations technicians, licensed clinical addiction counselors, a dietician, and a credentialed school teacher.
Of the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date, one was asked to assess the level of support received from staff and the level of training found in staff, and gave the facility four out of five stars in both categories. The other individual, however, was asked to assess the staff’s level of training and experience, and gave it just two stars.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The facility’s website describes a home-like atmosphere with meals that are prepared with approval from a dietitian. The two individuals polled to date gave the facility three and four out of five stars for its accommodations, and four and five stars for its cleanliness.
Communication with loved ones is restricted during treatment, and smoking is prohibited for the duration of treatment.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
The two alumni reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date are mostly positive. Both Wayne and Monica indicated that they would recommend treatment at this center, and gave it four or five out of five stars for its overall effectiveness.
Though each alum gave the facility mostly four- or five-star ratings for the core elements of its treatment such as its family program, the overall quality of its group counseling, and its basis in the 12-Steps, both reviewers gave the facility lower ratings of three stars and one star for its holistic options. Monica, the only reviewer polled on the center’s counseling options to date, gave this metric two stars, indicating that treatment is effective but traditional and perhaps lacking in extra-curricular activities. Monica noted high staff turnover, but also wrote that she appreciated the structure. Wayne wrote: “They are very laid back, and attentive to you as an individual. My experience was a good one.”
Elsewhere online reviews are mixed. The facility has an average rating of 3.2 out of five stars based on four ratings on Google to date. Orson’s four-star review indicated that treatment was satisfactory but the “food could be better.” On the other hand, Derrick awarded just one star due to what he felt were improper evaluations and wrote: “i will never go back there.”
According to the facility’s website, Vitality ACTIONS accepts most insurance policies, including Medicaid, and offers a sliding fee scale for qualifying clients. To date, the single alum polled on the center’s affordability gave it four out of five stars.
