ABOUT BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE AT THE GERALD CHAMPION REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Located in Alamogordo, N.M., about half an hour from White Sands National Monument, the Behavioral Medicine unit of the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults struggling with mental health disorders. There is also an acute inpatient unit designed specifically for older adults with a primary psychiatric diagnosis.

According to the facility’s website, the center’s mission is “to provide quality care that stresses the importance of Dignity, Respect, Confidentiality, and helping the individual achieve an optimal level of functioning.”

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The center’s website indicates the programs are designed for older adults who are struggling from an emotional, behavioral, or mental health disorder. The facility’s IOP meets Monday through Friday and conducts its services in the “least restrictive environment” possible, according to hospital’s website.

Treatment is evidence-based and components of the program include individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy. Educational workshops focus on stress management, health and wellness training, grief and loss resolution, and developing conflict resolution skills, communications skills, and coping techniques. Medication management is provided if needed.

The center encourages family and friends to participate in treatment and educational programs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s website indicated, the treatment team includes a psychiatrist, master’s level clinicians, and mental health providers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, the four people polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing on the center’s accommodations and amenities gave the center four out of five stars.

Also, one former client and one loved one noted they wished the hospital offered private rooms.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, two provided negative reviews, while one former client left positive feedback.

The one alumni who had a positive experience at the center gave it five out of five stars when asked if they would recommend Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, for treatment effectiveness, the center’s program for co-occurring disorders, and when asked about the staff’s level of experience and training. Yet, the alum did mention they wished they had a private room.

The two other alumni offered much more negative feedback and awarded the hospital just one and two stars respectively for its treatment effectiveness. “In a word, awful,” wrote one extremely displease alum, while the other told Rehabs.com that they believed just about every aspect of the facility was a weakness.

The Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center as a whole received an average rating of 2.5 out of five stars based on 33 Google reviews at the time of this writing.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility a mostly positive review. They gave it four out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness and its staff’s level of training and experience. The loved one also gave the center five stars when asked if they would recommend the facility. Their one complaint was the lack of private rooms.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, some commercial insurance is accepted, as is Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance is available to uninsured clients who qualify.

Worst week of my life. The nurses were rude and uncaring. The doctor there was worthless. The food was disgusting. The nurses were actually mean to patients and treated us like crud. The only good people there was the teacher and one nurse. Everyone else made the situation much worse. Wish to never be there again

Close to hospital which is lake west. In case pt has withdrawals. Facility is old and run down. I think any facility rehab is more about you than the staff. You are in charge of yourself and I believe that these people will help uou

The adolescent ward had kind and caring staff who really seemed to care about the patients. I was there for 6 days and was given knowledge and skills to use when I left. They set me up with therapy and a crisis plan as well. It was overall a beneficial experience, though I hope not to have to go back.

The "doctor" in charge of the Addiction program is absolutely worthless. He does not respond to patients and is basically just phoning it in! When the STAFF that is working in the Addiction Program says that too its pretty bad!! Force him to retire and hire someone who wants to help people who really NEED help!

Hannibal Lecter would've been preferable over their Dr. I would expect a doctor working here to be a whole lot better with people.

One doctor in particular, detox unit, nurses and staff were strengths. Weaknesses: Cafeteria, space, smoking policy (addicts need to smoke), certain staff members were abrasive & rude without provocation. Long drive for most people outside of Cleveland. The people I met in IOP here and the doctors, and their asst, helped me get sober (along w Suboxone).

Strengths: attentiveness, secure safe enviroment, food. Weaknesses: understaffed for proper one to one treatments, stay is too short for group treatments before your released. family meetings are brief and do not placate them to how you are doing.

This is a no nonsense facility and if you're serious about getting sober this place will give you what you need to succeed. I relapsed after 4 months but I used what they taught me in the first visit to get back on track.
