ABOUT ACADIA HOSPITAL

Acadia Hospital in Bangor, Maine, offers a continuum of care for adults and adolescents struggling with substance use and other mental health disorders. The facility is one of only five (2.5 percent) hospital-based facilities offering inpatient care in the state, as well as one of 44 (22.1 percent) that provides intensive outpatient treatment. The behavioral health hospital, an affiliate of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, also offers outpatient eating disorder treatment and pain management services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

One of the central goals of treatment at Acadia Hospital is to empower clients in their long-term recovery, according to the facility's website. Treatment during a short inpatient stay focuses on crisis stabilization of major mental illness symptoms, such as those involved with schizophrenia, depression, or a dual diagnosis of chemical dependency and another serious and persistent mental illness. In Maine, 87 (43.7 percent) treatment facilities service individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders.

Treatment methods utilized include individual and group therapy, education, and medication management. Electroconvulsive therapy is also available. Family members are encouraged to participate in designated therapy sessions. In addition to substance-related 12-step meetings, Acadia also hosts Gamblers Anonymous meetings on-site.

At Acadia Hospital, a typical partial hospitalization (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) is six weeks or less, meeting up to five days a week, depending on individualized treatment plans.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Website photographs depict a clinical rehab setting brightened by lots of natural light, expansive windows, and a healing garden and lawn with stone sculptures. The on-site gym features a rock-climbing structure and basketball court, and the cafeteria-style dining room is set with small, shared tables. Acadia Hospital offers two adult units and units for adolescents and children. At the time of this writing, the seven Rehabs.com survey respondents polled on the matter awarded the center's cleanliness favorable reviews.

Cleanliness and Upkeep: 3.9/5

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Feedback from the five former clients of Acadia Hospital polled by Rehabs.com to date revealed several trends in both praise and criticism. All but one would recommend the facility, each awarding the overall effectiveness of treatment four or five out of five stars.

On the other hand, the data from metrics measuring available options in counseling approaches and exercise and leisure activity suggested a somewhat limited, inflexible experience. Nevertheless, one alum cited "routine" as a facility strength. The hospital's capacity to treat co-occurring conditions fared better, with four- and five-star ratings.

Family participation also received criticism, along with a one-star and a two-star rating from two alumni surveyed in this category. Opinions of the staff's level of training and experience were split between one high and two low ratings. "I recommend this facility for co-occuring illness, but feel that they did not offer support for your family," one alum wrote.

Ratings were lukewarm on secondary sites at the time of this writing as well, such as on Google, where the center earned a three out of five-star average rating based on 39 reviews.[1] Though most of the reviews are for the hospital as a whole, the single reviewer to mention mental health awarded the center five stars and added, "I have to travel an hour and a half to see the doctors but it is worth it! I will not go anywhere else."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The four loved ones polled by Rehabs.com provided more consistently moderate feedback for Acadia Hospital with three-star ratings for most of 15 metrics measured. All four would recommend the facility to others, but only one would do so strongly. Loved ones gave its highest average ratings for staff experience and counseling options

Reviewers tended to cite counselors and other staff members as strengths, with one loved one describing staff as "very professional and very informative." While loved ones and alumni agreed that the facility's holistic therapy offerings were limited, two parents expressed frustration with overly strict policies. However, family members gave moderate ratings for the amount of family participation in treatment.

Complaints tended to focus on communication and administrative concerns.

The counselor was great, No tolerance or understanding in certain situations. They use a lot of medications, some I felt were unnessesary. My son was on 5 different ones.

The people there are very kind and they accept you and are able to help you through difficult times. The times where I was allowed to visit family was strict. I would like there to be more room for me to roam and for there to be spaces for me to go and think. At times I felt very uncomfortable.
