ACT Counseling & Education, headquartered in Phoenix/Scottsdale, Ariz., offers drug, alcohol, and gambling addiction counseling through intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment. The organization provides services out of three locations – Chandler, Glendale, and Scottsdale – and serves adults, families, and couples. Within the state, the center is among 19.3 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that also treat gambling addiction.


Before beginning treatment at ACT Counseling & Education, clients participate in an intake process and full assessment for clinicians to determine the extent of their needs, be it for substance use, gambling addiction, trauma-related concerns, or other conditions. A determination then is made regarding the best course of treatment.

The center’s treatment typically includes a number of approaches, such as one-on-one therapy sessions, acceptance therapy, and commitment therapy. Emphasis also is placed on communications skills and relapse prevention.

For problem and compulsive gambling, the center offers a dedicated life skills group. This program runs for 20 weeks. Treatment for gambling addiction includes one-on-one sessions and well as three-hour group sessions.

Family programs span 12 to 20 weeks. Clients attend one night per week for three hours. Sessions focus on building relationships and trust and on issues such as anger and resentment, guilt and shame, healthy boundaries, and mending fences. The center’s Actualizing Change Program also runs for 20 weeks and addresses how to build better relationships and a new life post-recovery; clients attend one three-hour session each week.

The center provides DUI Services, including screenings and Level I and II treatment. ACT Counseling & Education also offers expert consultation on an individual and group counseling basis. Aftercare support is available, as needed.


ACT Counseling & Education is accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Staff members include master’s- and bachelor’s-level substance abuse counselors and a family program coordinator certified to work with compulsive gamblers. The center is run by a clinical director.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive alumni feedback. However, on secondary review site Google, ACT Counseling & Education received highly favorable feedback: perfect five stars based on one review about the Glendale facility; and another perfect five stars based on two reviews about its Scottsdale treatment center. [1] [2] The only commentary that accompanied these ratings was from reviewer Lynette, who wrote the following about Glendale: “Love the staff here. Always smells lovely in the office and very clean.”


The sole staff member of ACT Counseling & Education submitted a positive review of the center to at the time of this writing, as reflected in the four out of five stars awarded for its treatment effectiveness. Connie cited “training for interns” and “experience of staff” were particular strengths of the organization. She also gave high rankings for the staff’s honesty and protocols, and noted that the clients always came first.

Trained at Hazelden and worked there for seven years. Three years in an extended program for women. Certified to work with compulsive gamblers over ten years. Strengths include experience of staff, patient needs come first. Training for interns.
