Headquartered in Santa Clarita, Calif., Action Family Counseling provides a full continuum of substance abuse treatment services for adults and adolescents in Ventura, Los Angeles, and Kern Counties. The Bakersfield location offers intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment for adolescents and adults. Residential care and partial treatment are also available.

Programming is designed to address and treat co-occurring mental health disorders. Clients enrolled in the intensive outpatient program typically receive treatment three hours a day, three days a week for three months. Most of this time is spent in process groups, educational workshops, and structured exercises. Sessions cover the 12-Steps and focus on spirituality, relapse prevention, emotional wellbeing, and healthy relationships. Participants also meet with a counselor for family therapy once a week. Aftercare plans are developed prior to completing the program.

According to the facility’s website, services are administered by counselors and therapists. Additionally, the organization’s founder has over 30 years of experience working with teens, adults, and families affected by substance abuse.

Alumni reviews are limited, but the two individuals polled by to date had overwhelmingly positive things to say about their experiences. Both respondents commended the “absolutely awesome” staff and credited the organization for their recovery. “Action is a very great place that teaches not just tools for recovery but life tools as well,” O.P. wrote. Alison, who used the IOP program as a step-down option following residential treatment, offered her wholehearted recommendation. “If you need help, go to Action, I have that family to thank for helping me find a new way to live my life,” she wrote.

Elsewhere online, reviews are nearly as positive and cover both the IOP and residential services at Action Family Counseling. The facility’s official Facebook page, which it can manage, boasts a rating of 4.8 stars based on 60 reviews.[1] On Yelp, 15 reviewers left ratings averaging 4.73 out of five stars to date where most thanked the program and facility for taking them in and saving their lives.[2] There is also a single five-star rating on Google.[3]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s affiliated friends or family members. One reviewer on Yelp, however, was unhappy with the treatment her son received after leaving one of the center’s residential programs. This reviewer, Carmen, expressed dissatisfaction with the staff, which she characterized as “ineffective,” and the facility’s management. “All in all, I would not recommend this facility. Their procedures are archaic and ineffective and the right hand doesn't seem to know what the left hand is doing,” she wrote.

Jessica, the one staff member who submitted a review to, had only positive things to say about her employer. She described the staff as a “big family,” and included her personal story of recovery in her recommendation of the facility. “I know that I would still be clean and sober without Action… If I was no longer an employee, I would continue to recommend friends and family members because they treat you as if you are!” she wrote.

Action Family Counseling accepts most private insurance plans.

Action is a very great place that teaches not just tools for recovery but life tools as well more than feeling love from my family I feel like action is my family and the staff members there have taught me pretty much the things I know such as how to be the young man I am today and for that action is the greatest place that I've been to ever

I would highly recommend Action Family Counseling to anyone with an addiction problem. The staff is absolutely awesome, you get 3 or (as many meals you want a day), a warm bed to sleep in, and just an all around welcoming feeling... Kind of like you've made it home finally, when you walk in that place. I also recommend the after care or intensive outpatient program immediately following residential program. If you need help, go to Action, I have that family to thank for helping me find a new way to live my life.

I LOVE Action Family Bakersfield!!! I have been employed by Action for almost 4 years. All the staff is like a big family, working together to help people and families effected by addiction. The program directors are incredibly intelligent and insightful. The facility managers go above and beyond to keep clients comfortable and important. The chef is a gift to all who consume his food, he caters to each individual's likes and dislikes when shopping and prepares delicious home cooked meals 3 times a day. 5 days a week. The counsellors are amazing and genuinely care about each client's recovery. I know that I would still be clean and sober without Action, 4 1/2 years and counting!!! If I was no longer an employee, I would continue to recommend friends and family members because they treat you as if you are!
