Action Family Counseling Philosophy
Action Family Counseling employs a multidisciplinary approach to chemical dependency treatment, providing residential care, intensive outpatient services, and partial hospitalization to those struggling with addiction in Southern California. Action Family Counseling provides daily addiction education groups focusing on themes such as relapse prevention, addiction as a disease, personal relationship development, peer problem solving, behavioral triggers, and 12-Step principles. In addition to group work, clients are encouraged to attend individual counseling sessions to develop skills for independent living, personal growth, stress management, decision making, communication, and more. Loved ones are encouraged to assume an active role in individuals’ recovery by participating in family therapy sessions.
Areas of Specialization
Clients are invited to participate in regular outings to scenic locations for holistic recovery. Excursions include outings to picturesque beaches, day trips to Lake Piru, and rejuvenating outdoor walks and hikes.
Exquisite Residential Amenities
Located in an exquisitely appointed two-story manor, Action Family Counseling’s historic residential facility features an early 19th-century colonial revival structure complete with an idyllic patio and second story balcony nestled above century-old foliage. Once a high-end bed and breakfast, Action Family Counseling has transformed the premises to serve as an enriching and rejuvenating setting for enduring recovery.
Client & Family Support Groups
Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.
Outpatient treatment describes all addiction treatment that is not residential. Patients live at home while undergoing rehab.
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
The focus of cognitive behavioral therapy (also called CBT) is helping people to understand the thoughts and emotions that underlie their addiction with the goal of learning new, healthier and more productive ways to understand and express themselves.
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.
This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.
If it wasn't for Action family counseling I would not have over twenty months clean. I can honestly say that if it was not for this program, the tools that I gained and an introduction to a fellowship I would most likely be dead. With this being said I will say with utmost conviction that Action literally saved my life. Staff are wonderful and genuinely empathetic to the needs of those struggling with addiction.
They saved my life!! Great staff and a great program that works for both alcoholics and addicts!
Back in January 12, 2010 my daughter called me and told me I was going to detox. She said I had just called her. I didn't believe that I drug dialed her. She said I was going and that I was going today. I had just had a medical procedure under anesthesia that morning and wasn't feeling good at all. I was pretty mad to be forced to go. Detox was a nightmare and there was nothing to do. Just watch tv and sleep. They kept telling me I could go home after 3 days, that didn't happen. My counselor there told me I could go home. When my husband came to pick me up he asked to speak to my husband in private. When he came out he told me that if I didn't go to treatment at Action that our marriage was over. One of the counselors at Action told him to bring me straight there. I begged my husband to let me go home and do a load of laundry and pack my clothes that I needed and he took me out to dinner. I was so grateful. I checked into Action in the evening and I was still very exhausted. I remember sleeping the first 2 days I was there. I became angry because I didn't see where I had a problem. We were always busy at the house and that was great. I had the best counselor any one could ask for. Tracie is still friends with me and we keep in touch. After a couple weeks I stopped being as angry and started having fun. The head counselor Darren was amazing. He counseled my husband and I. I learned a lot about myself, my disease, and how it effects the family. When it came time to come home I didn't want to. I was so scared. Thank God I had already done the first 3 steps and had an amazing sponsor. I was as prepared to go as I could be. If you're looking for a good treatment center Action is the best place you can go. If I knew someone who needed to go I would bring them there. I am now 4 years clean and sober. This is a lifetime commitment. But the reward is you get your life back, better than it ever was before.
Words can't express how thankful and appreciative I am for Cary Quashen and his wonderful organization of caring individuals. I highly recommend Action Family Counseling to families of teens in crisis! They can help and they really do care!
Great place to to start the journey to recovery, the staff is Awesome and the facilities in great locations with amazing panoramic.
If it wasn't for Action reaching out and Carey putting out his hand, I wouldn't have gone into rehab, IOP, and I definitely wouldn't have 27 months clean and sober. Thank you to Carey and everything Action does. They saved my life, truly.

ABOUT ACTION FAMILY COUNSELING – PIRU
Located within minutes of Ventura County’s Lake Piru, Action Family Counseling (AFC) in Piru offers residential treatment for adults struggling with drug and alcohol addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. This center is one of many AFC facilities in Southern California, and though other locations treat adolescents, AFC Piru exclusively treats adults. Medical detox is not available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The treatment philosophy of AFC asserts that addiction is a disease. To address this, clients take an initial assessment to evaluate their alcohol and drug use, mental health disorders, and educational needs. Staff use these assessments to compile a full psychosocial history and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.
Residential treatment is based on the 12-Steps, and residents are expected to attend AA/NA meetings seven days a week. The center also holds that family involvement is an important part of treatment.
All treatment programs are individualized, and use a combination of individual and family therapy, daily group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), solution-focused therapy, and specialty therapy for trauma. There are also daily addiction education groups, some of which address peer-based problem solving. Identifying behavioral triggers and developing healthy relationships are key goals.
This facility offers a staff-to-client ratio of 1:6 and is comprised of "dedicated, compassionate, and highly trained experts in the fields of Addictive Medicine, Substance Abuse Treatment, and Mental Health," according to the facility.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
This is a secluded, 22-bed facility. Residents share rooms with private bathrooms in a two-story Colonial Revival home built in 1887. Leisure provisions include regular excursions to nearby beaches and Lake Piru.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received feedback for Action Family Counseling from a dozen former clients. Most reported positive experiences, though three reviewers were very displeased. They complained about staff being too distracted and said employees were "unprofessional." Maria left no star ratings but wrote: "This facility is understaffed and the counselors lack the proper education...The house itself is disgusting and filthy." K.S., who gave just one out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition, noted the same and added: "Action Family Counseling is just another money sucking treatment center. This place is a JOKE."
Contradictory to what displeased reviewers wrote, many of the nine former clients who left positive feedback praised the staff, including Tyler, who gave five stars in previously mentioned categories, and wrote: "I came here and it saved my life the staff are easy to talk to and truly care about everyone that goes through. I truly believe the staff is what makes this program so great."
Additionally, Jennifer, who gave the same high ratings as Tyler, wrote: "Our day was always structured which I liked. It kept you focused on recovery," but she also noted that "There was really not enough staff at night to deal with things that came up."
