Adolescent Growth Philosophy

At Adolescent Growth, we believe that effectively treating teens requires special insight and a comprehensive understanding of their needs. To that end, our multidisciplinary team works with you and your child to create a personalized plan for success.

Areas of Specialization

  • Client & Family Support Groups
Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.

  • Creative Arts Therapy
Writing, making art or engaging in theater can be deeply therapeutic for people working to recover from addiction. Many facilities offer one or several forms of creative arts therapy as a way to help patients learn to express their feelings in productive ways.

Located just outside of Chicago in Lombard, Ill., Adolescent Growth offers intensive outpatient (IOP), partial hospitalization (PHP), and residential treatment to teens between the ages of 12 and 17 struggling with addiction, mental health disorders, and co-occurring disorders, with a special program for eating disorders. Adolescent Growth has three locations, with two additional facilities in California. Medical detox is not available, although psychiatric consultation and medication management is provided.

Treatment at Adolescent Growth is holistic and also provides 12-step intervention, with a focus on both physical and mental health.. Teens attend school, individual counseling, and group therapy. The two therapeutic methods most commonly used are cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectic behavior therapy (DBT), and clients also work out in a gym and participate in yoga and meditation.

Since the program is focused on teens, family participation is encouraged. This includes family therapy up to twice per week, weekly parent support groups, and a multi-family restoration workshop.

Each client leaves with a relapse prevention plan and those who find success at Adolescent Growth are granted free access to the facility’s alumni group, which meets monthly.

The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, licensed and certified therapists, medical assistants, academic coordinators, and a registered dietitian. The facility maintains a staff-to-client-ratio of 1:3.

Adolescent Growth’s Lombard location is a 10-bed facility. It is homelike and offers high-tech conference rooms, furnished living areas, and a modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. Meals are prepared by a registered dietician and clients have access to a gym.

While has not yet received reviews from Adolescent Growth’s alumni, feedback from former clients on Yelp is mostly negative. Out of 15 ratings, the facility had received 3.3 out of five stars and several respondents complained about poor food and nutrition options and insufficient management.[1] H.H., who attended the facility in 2012, wrote: "They took 20+ kids at a time and shoved them into a 30x30 living room area and we weren't allowed to leave. They didnt buy enough food for us so a lot of us went hungry most of the time."

On the other hand, Alexandria gave five out of five stars and wrote: "My first day at Adolescent Growth, I cried, didn't want to be there and didn't talk to anyone," but also said, in the end, "They treated me like family and I felt very safe there."

The single review from a loved one to date was positive. Following her daughter’s successful completion of treatment, Lisa gave the facility five out of five stars for all evaluated criteria such as treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition. Lisa praised the facility for its level of family participation and the helpfulness of the staff.

On secondary review sites, loved ones were more vocal but also more mixed in their opinions of the facility. Susan gave a glowing five-star review on both Yelp and Facebook, where to date there are 11 ratings averaging 4.4 out of five stars.[2] In her representative review, she detailed professional, attentive staff, a home-like environment, and stellar communication among staff, clients, and parents

Other loved ones accused the facility of being a greedy corporation with poor management and a lack of professionals. An anonymous review told Yelp that the place where adolescents are dropped off is not where they live. "The boys are bussed to a facility in a not so great area of downtown Los Angeles. The owners are very secretive about this issue and only let parents know if they beg." Additionally, another parent who gave just one star on Yelp wrote: "They are unorganized and not equipped to deal with drug related issues," and went on to detail extensive financial and legal issues that the facility induced.

One staff member reviewed Adolescent Growth and gave every category five out of five stars, including holistic treatment offerings, cleanliness, and affordability. They wrote: "Great facility with very caring and attentive staff."

According to the facility’s website, Adolescent Growth accepts most private health insurance plans, such as Aetna and United.

Would not send my worst enemy there, we called the Lombard location to learn more about their program and availability. We explained our circumstance that our child was just admitted to an inpatient program and it would be 5 to 7 days before they would be available to come to their location and we were told it would not be an issue. After 3 days it was a daily call of when our child was coming to their facility. Our child arrived on Tuesday at 4:00 pm and Wednesday at 10:00 am we received a call stating that our child was taken to the ER and that they did not fit their program. When we got to the ER most of his belonging were there and we are still trying to get the remainder of items. The program director stated she would be there to help us find a different location that better fit our child's needs. What a joke, has never returned our call after 10 calls to the facility and left message and emails asks for a return call as we want to know details of what happened as one member called us on Tuesday evening to say what a wonderful child we hand and how well they were getting along with the other children. Discharge paperwork said we went against medical recommendations, seriously he went to an inpatient facility after they took him to the ER. Scary that places like this exist and parents that truly want to help their children have to live thru a night mare experience like this.

Before my daughter went to Adolescent Growth, she had been struggling with depression and an addiction to heroin and opiates for over 2 years. We tried everything from IOP programs to other residential programs until finally, we were referred to Adolescent Growth by my daughter's School Counselor. Initially, we were very skeptical of how effective treatment would be here since nothing had worked in the past. Very quickly however, we learned the this program was much different then any of the programs we have tried before. The therapists here did a great job of really connecting with my daughter and really getting to the bottom of her issues. What really made the difference for us was the amount of time the spent not only with my daughter, but with our family. The Saturday family groups and the family support groups were beyond helpful. All of the staff at the facility seemed to genuinely care about us and really tried everything they could to help us. This program saved my daughter and our family. Thank you Adolescent Growth !
