Aldersgate Youth Services Bureau is a private, nonprofit social services agency dedicated to helping men, women, children, and entire families overcome emotional and behavioral challenges. Located in Willow Grove, Pa., roughly 45 minutes north of Philadelphia, the established nonprofit serves its local community through individual, group, and family counseling, drug abuse education and prevention programming, and school- and home-based support services. It is one of 284 (roughly 57 percent) facilities in Pennsylvania that are non-profit.

According to the nonprofit’s website, services at Aldersgate are designed to help individuals develop their self-esteem and improve their communication and problem-solving skills within an environment that is “culturally affirming and growth-promoting.” Counseling is geared towards clients who are experiencing issues related to family relationships, parenting, emotion management, substance abuse, identity, behavioral issues, and many other areas of life.

To better help children, teens, and young adults make positive and healthy decisions in the face of alcohol, drugs and other potentially dangerous behaviors, Aldersgate takes a hands-on approach that is interactive and evidence-based. These prevention-focused services may include in-class education, support groups for students, healthy lifestyle workshops, and discussion groups.

Aldersgate also runs a specialized home-based counseling service, aptly titled Services to Children in their Own Home (SCOH), for children and families in need of intensive family therapy and case management services. The program works through four separate components: individual counseling, education for parents, case management, and crisis management.

Finally, the nonprofit works hard to support young students who are at-risk by providing school-based services. Children and teens struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety, drug issues, and poor academic performance and/or attendance records can benefit from short-term individual support, classroom presentations, small-sized group sessions, and outreach and referrals. Aldersgate is among the only 22 percent of facilities in Pennsylvania to offer adolescent services.

Aldersgate is led by an executive director who has more than 30 years of experience as a psychiatric social worker, family therapist, and social service administrator. Other staff members include master’s level clinicians, prevention specialists, and certified teachers. Collectively, according to the nonprofit’s website, Aldersgate professionals have over 200 years of experience.
