Located on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Aloha House, Inc. is one of Hawaii’s 138 private, non-profit facilities. The facility provides a range of services for adults and youth seeking treatment for substance abuse, mental illness, and co-occurring disorders. Since its inception in 1977, Aloha House has expanded its services from offering outpatient and residential treatment to include “comprehensive, family-centered behavioral health interventions for the prevention and treatment of individual and family dysfunction.” Medically-monitored detox, sober living, and aftercare planning are also offered.

Before beginning treatment, all clients are thoroughly assessed to create an individualized treatment plan. This can often include family involvement, in order to fully understand the impact that drugs and alcohol have had on the client’s life. If needed, medically-monitored detox is available, which includes 24/7 nursing supervision. Aloha House is one of only six non-hospital facilities in Hawaii that offers detox services.

Unique to Aloha House, clients are considered key members of their own treatment team; in fact, clients are required to sign off on their own treatment plans. These initial plans are then adjusted on an ongoing basis as progress is made toward individual goals - for instance, from residential to outpatient treatment.

According to the facility’s website, Aloha House has two components: a Substance Abuse Services Division and a Mental Health and Social Services/Child & Adolescent Mental Health Programs Division. Only 38.5 percent of Hawaii’s facilities offer mental health screenings to identify mental health disorders. The Substance Abuse Services Division includes detox, residential treatment, sober living programs, and outpatient care. The program works with the criminal justice system to provide an alternative to prison.

Residential programs provide a structured environment for care that includes group and individual treatment, family therapy, recovery education, case management, discharge planning, and help to develop sober living and support within the community. There are also sober living and outpatient services with a track specifically for men and day treatment for those seeking treatment for co-occurring disorders.

The Mental Health and Social Services Division is designed to assist adults in the recovery process with accessing healthcare, housing, jobs, and food through residential, outpatient, and community-based services. The center’s staff is also available to children and adolescents with a range of issues such as bullying, anxiety and fears, acting out, family problems, and attention problems. Medication management is also available.

Aloha House’s treatment team consists of an array of highly experienced staff including licensed social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, certified substance abuse counselors, nurses, and marriage and family therapists. Aloha House is one of the 105 CARF-accredited facilities in Hawaii.

It has been years ago. It seemed like a good program at the time. The staff was a strength. Lacks counseling.

The treatment was caring and effective. However, it was costly and there needed to be more follow up on patients.
