Located in a former boutique hotel blocks from the water in Sausalito, Calif., just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, Alta Mira offers luxury residential and outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with substance abuse issues, with an emphasis on [dual diagnosis. Medically monitored detox is available on site.

Alta Mira uses the 12-Steps and 12-step alternatives alongside a wide array of treatment modalities.

Residential treatment is offered in durations of 30 or 90 days. For both programs, treatment includes daily group therapy and two or three sessions of individual therapy every week, as well as individual spiritual counseling, educational classes, a four-day family program, holistic options, and aftercare.

The 90-day program also includes evidence-based modalities such as trauma-informed psychodrama and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and intensive workshops on topics such as trauma, money, and grief/loss. Both 30-day and 90-day programs include a four-day family program. This program is also available independently to loved ones who do not currently have family members involved in a program at Alta Mira.

An eight-week intensive outpatient program (IOP) is offered in the daytime or the evening. The program focuses on evidence-based methods such as mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and offers weekly individual therapy and 12-step facilitation.

Continuing care options include weekly group counseling and quarterly alumni events.

Staff includes a licensed clinical psychologist, a physician specializing in addiction medicine, consulting physicians and psychiatrists, and PhD and masters-level counselors and therapists.

The center has a large deck with sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, and as a former boutique hotel, offers luxurious accommodations. During detox, clients sleep in private rooms. In the residential phase of treatment, they may sleep in a double occupancy room, a private room, or a private suite. Those in private accommodations are welcome to bring pets. Meals are prepared by an executive gourmet chef and healthy snacks are available 24/7. Clients have access to a small on-site gym and a full-service gym nearby, along with personal training sessions.

Extracurricular activities include yoga, trips to the beach, and canoeing.

Of the two alumni polled by to date, one would recommend Alta Mira and the other would not. The alumni disagreed about the level of staff support provided: while K.M.W. gave Alta Mira five stars in this category, Chris gave it just two stars, and wrote: “I felt isolated at Alta Mira. No one asked me how I was doing until I had been there a week.” The reviewers also disagreed about the overall quality of the center’s individual and group counseling and its holistic options, with K.M.W. again giving Alta Mira five stars in each category while Chris gave one or two stars. Chris also complained about the expense of treatment, but K.M.W. wrote: “Personalized program, sincere concern, no personal degradation, compassionate, experienced staff.”

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded mostly positive feedback, with average ratings of 4.5 stars based on 20 reviews on Facebook (where the center can manage its own page), 4.2 stars based on five reviews on Google, and a one-star and a five-star rating on Yelp.[1] [2][3] Positive reviewers frequently praised the physical facility and the food. “Amazing dream, amazing views, amazing treatment protocol, views and options,” Shireen wrote in a representative review on Facebook.

Of the two loved ones polled by to date, one gave Alta Mira five stars for its overall effectiveness, and the other, two stars. In their comments, one reviewer cited the center’s high cost as a weakness, and other expressed a desire for better holistic options. However, one of the anonymous reviewers also wrote: “Help was effective and people were nice and friendly.”

Secondary review sites yielded just one review from a loved one, and it was negative. In a two-star review on Google, the anonymous reviewer claimed that the center had enabled their loved one’s bad behavior and manipulative tendencies. “If your addict is younger, or not highly accomplished or is looking for a way out of responsibility and accountability, stay away; in their terms, A.M. is a huge enabler for escaping responsibility,” they wrote.

The center’s residential programs are self-pay only. For IOP treatment, Alta Mira accepts PPO insurance from providers including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and United. The three individuals polled to date on the center’s affordability gave it a two-star, a three-star, and a five-star rating.

I felt isolated at Alta Mira. No one asked me how I was doing until I had been there a week. Way overpriced, and way underserved. after spending 50k, I just noticed a charge on my CC made by Alta Mira for a "massage session" and toiletries? A month after I left? No notification, just put it on my card. This facility is simply outrageous. I have never been more stressed in my life. I cannot tell you how glad I was to leave.
