Located in Brookline, Mass., Arbour-HRI Hospital is a private psychiatric facility that provides inpatient, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) services for adults struggling with mental health, co-occurring disorders, and substance abuse. Part of Arbour Health System, the largest private behavioral health system in Massachusetts, Arbour-HRI Hospital also offers specialized PHP services for women and the LGBT community, as well as outpatient (OP) care through Arbour Counseling Services.

For those with opioid addiction, the hospital offers Suboxone treatment programs to help alleviate any withdrawal discomforts.

Upon admission, patients undergo initial “level of care evaluations” with clinicians to determine the most appropriate treatment program. Psychiatric inpatient service includes stabilization, 24-hour nursing care, medication management, and group therapy. Family education and involvement also plays a major role in this short-term program. Those with dual diagnoses attend on-site 12-step meetings and perform “step-work” throughout their treatment.

The Triangle Program, the hospital’s PHP track geared specifically for LGBT individuals, offers treatment designed to address depression, anxiety, sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS, as well as co-occurring and other sensitive disorders. Through group therapy and educational classes, the women’s-only PHP program aims to equip participants with coping skills, improve their self-esteem and sense of assertiveness, and provide a safe place to address past traumatic experiences. Both programs use evidence-based practices, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and make referrals to outpatient specialists, as necessary.

Highly recommended as a step-down aftercare service for graduates of inpatient and PHP care and those unable to attend any of the daytime programs, IOP sessions take place Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, for a total of nine hours per week. The rehabilitation center’s OP also treats individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction.

Across its various programs, the hospital employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed clinicians, program directors, group therapists, and master’s level counselors. Nurses provide 24-hour care, and internists are available to address any physical issues that may arise during treatment.

While specific information regarding the facility’s accommodations is limited, the 66-bed private psychiatric hospital runs four inpatient units to better address its patients' needs. Transportation services may be available for PHP patients, depending on their specific situation.

To date, received feedback from one alumnus. This anonymous reviewer gave the facility consistent top five-star ratings in the major categories of treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition. This former client also awarded perfect five stars for counseling, staff experience, and would recommend the facility to others. However, this individual assigned the lowest one star to family participation. They told "Good mentors, structured days, helpful activities. However, location was a weakness. Helpful dealing with dual diagnosis issues. Addiction/mental health."

On Google, Arbour-HRI Hospital received divergent reviews with an average rating of two out of five stars from 23 individuals (a mix of alumni, loved ones, and former staff) to date. [1] PHP program alum Billy wrote: “I can’t say enough bad things about this place… The environment makes you feel worse than you already do. It’s in the basement. It’s totally low-budget and gives you a cold feeling -- brick walls, no windows, hasn’t been updated since at least the early 80s. The food is worse than prison food. The staff are relatively cold."

Yet one reviewer gave the top five-star rating to her experience in the Women's PHP and wrote that: "already it has made a positive impact. The clinicians are young, but really know their stuff and are great at their jobs" and added "I read many negative reviews before attending, but I am very glad that I did not let them dissuade me from coming."

Arbour Health System accepts most major insurance providers, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, and United Behavioral Health, as well as Medicare and MassHealth managed care plans.
