Located in Covina, Calif., 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Aurora Charter Oak Behavioral Health Care operates a psychiatric hospital and a Residential Recovery Center for addiction. One of 14 facilities operated by this healthcare organization, Aurora Charter Oak Hospital offers on-site detoxification, inpatient care, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17. This facility also treats co-occurring disorders may also seek treatment through the 12-step model of recovery.


To determine an appropriate level of care, clinicians perform a behavioral and psychiatric assessment. If an individual requires psychiatric stabilization or medical detoxification, they can be referred to the inpatient program. To stabilize a client, Aurora Charter Oak combines evidence-based treatment methods with pharmacological intervention.

After detoxification and initial stabilization, patients may be referred to the Residential Recovery Center. Typically lasting between 14 and 28 days, the residential program provides clients with a structured schedule of individual therapy, emotional process groups, relapse prevention workshops and on-site 12-step meetings.

During inpatient care, patients abide by a structured schedule of group and family therapy, along with educational classes on their disorders, coping skills training, Seeking Safety groups and recreational and expressive therapies.

Before discharge, clinicians form a comprehensive discharge plan, which may include a referral to the facility’s partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient program (IOP). IOP includes three therapy groups a day, up to five days a week, while the partial hospitalization program includes attending four groups per day. Upon program completion, alumni are invited to attend free aftercare groups for a year.


The treatment team includes mental health and chemical dependency counselors, a psychiatric nurse, a licensed therapist, activity and recreational therapist, a case manager and a social worker. Across the state of California, 90 percent of facilities are licensed, accredited or certified to operate.


Surrounded by 10 acres of well-kept grounds, the psychiatric hospital has 134 beds, while the Residential Recovery Center has 12. All outpatient programs are on-site. Aurora Charter Oak also offers complimentary meals and local transportation for outpatient clients. The seven individuals to leave user reviews at time of writing gave an average rating of three out of five stars for the facility's accommodations and amenities, with ratings ranging from low one-stars to perfect five-stars.


Of the three alumni who submitted reviews to, two gave positive ratings across 15 different evaluated metrics, including its cleanliness, the staff’s level of training and experience, and long-term treatment effectiveness.

A third, anonymous alum told they would not recommend the facility to others after receiving treatment that did not address his or her specific disorder.

On Google, two anonymous reviewers gave Aurora Charter Oak Behavioral Health Care a four and a five star review. [1] Commentary was brief but positive.

The facility has a more mixed rating on Yelp, where is currently holds a 2.5-star rating based on 33 user reviews. [2] Reviewers were polarized, giving either perfect five-star ratings or low one-star ratings. Commentary ranged from unabashed praise to harsh derision. It is important to note that there were nearly 19 additional reviews filed under Yelp's "Not Recommended" section and not factored into the averages.[3] All of these reviews were negative.


The four loved ones polled by at the time of this writing gave the facility mixed reviews. One anonymous reviewer gave Aurora Charter Oak nearly all four and five stars across 15 different evaluated metrics, including family participation. A second loved one awarded the facility five stars for its family participation, its cleanliness, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its staff’s level of training and experience, describing the staff as “extremely caring.”

The other two loved ones offered more negative feedback, suggesting the amenities were below par and the treatment was too expensive.


According to the facility’s website, Aurora Behavioral Health System accepts most private insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Medi-Cal is also accepted from individuals under the age of 21 or over 65, making Aurora Charter Oak one of 324 (22.7 percent) of facilities in California to accept some form of state-financed health insurance.

I have tried to talk to my son. Hung up on. Tried again, told 'too busy'. Don't send your loved ones here. Very expensive and they want the money up front, even if they don't manage the problem. Ineptidude personified.

My experience was great, I went back to my family clean and sober i still attend meetings, now I want to find a job that has to do some how with rehab.

It depends what kind of treatment. I must admit I wouldn't recommend it overall because for me they only focused on giving lots of meals even though I didn't have a severe eating disorder.
