Areas of Specialization

  • Dual Diagnosis/ Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.

  • Medical Detoxification
Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.

Located six miles from the beach in west Los Angeles, Authentic Recovery Center (ARC) offers a full spectrum of care for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Programming includes medical detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient (IOP) care, family programming, and aftercare. ARC not only treats co-occurring disorders, but also bases its treatment philosophy on the idea that most addictions are rooted in underlying psychological issues.

To gain admittance, individuals undergo a phone interview, which includes a psychological assessment and psychiatric evaluation, and those who require medical attention begin with medically monitored detox. Clients who then opt for residential treatment typically remain on-site for at least 30 days.

Treatment is tailored to the client’s individual needs, but most plans include a mix of individual counseling, experiential therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. Residents learn the 12-Steps, as well as about the disease model of addiction and relapse prevention. Clients also learn how to identify and cope with triggers. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), anger management, and other specific therapies are utilized during the long-term, second stage of residential care.

ARC’s outpatient treatment is used as a step-down option, or as ARC puts it, “the final step towards solid ground.” Programming is fluid by design; clients are not prescribed a set of treatment modalities. Rather, they utilize the ones that are most relevant to them based on where they are in their recovery. Additionally, clients may remain in the outpatient program for as long as they feel necessary. According to the facility’s website, some clients in their second and third years of recovery continue to participate in the outpatient program.

Aftercare may consist of housing assistance, referrals to community support groups, legal assistance, relationship counseling, and vocational aid. The facility also offers free alumni services for life which include regular meetings and activates, crisis lines, and access to online recovery chat rooms.

According to the facility’s website, ARC employs a multidisciplinary staff of physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, experiential therapists, certified substance abuse counselors, and other licensed professionals. A yoga instructor and nutritionist are also on staff.

ARC accommodates up to 12 people at a time. The facility itself is homelike, with well-appointed common areas and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Both private and semi-private rooms are available, and some bathrooms feature whirlpool tubs.

At the time of this writing, has received feedback from four former clients, whose mixed ratings average 2.5 out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. J.K. awarded just one star for this category as well as for meals and accommodations, and commented: “This place is awful it looks nice but they just put you through 12 step meetings.” Reviewers offered mixed comments about staff as well with one anonymous alum writing that they were “great” while another said they were the “downfall” of the facility.

Praise elsewhere online is mostly positive to date. On Yelp, reviews were majorly split: five reviewers gave five out of five stars, while four additional reviewers gave just one out of five stars.[1] On Authenticity Recovery Center’s Facebook page, which the center can manage, 30 Facebook reviewers all awarded the facility five out of five stars.[2] Alumni on these secondary sources praised the staff, treatment models, and professional environment. Alexys told Yelp: “The continued love and support I'm still receiving from ARC lets me know that I always have a support system to help guide me through tough times,” and Tony wrote on Facebook: “I've made friends that'll last a lifetime, and more importantly got help to better myself through this program… I was able to really get myself to love ME again.”

A single survey has been submitted by loved one, Lisa, to to date. She gave five out of five stars for nearly all evaluated metrics, such as treatment effectiveness, meals and nutrition, accommodations, connectivity, family participation, use of 12-Step, and counseling options. The only criteria to receive lesser ratings were holistic options (four stars) and faith-based treatment and affordability (three stars). Lisa, regardless, said: “I would gladly recommend to anyone who can afford it.” She also added that “ARC was very involved with the family.”

Loved ones who posted on secondary sources also praised staff’s attentiveness and support, including Kim whose five-star Yelp review said: “The staff is amazing! They helped us in the days leading up to our son's placement, helping both him and us through a very difficult and emotional event. They were strong and supportive and answered all of our questions and our son's concerns.”

Treatment at ARC is typically priced at $28,500 per month. The center’s programs are covered by in-network providers Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, and Cigna. ARC works with most other major insurance providers as well and offers an online insurance verification form. It does not accept Medicare/Medicaid or Medi-Cal.

Residential program is fantastic. Therapists aware well trained. Other staff are kind. Residents are kept busy and the groups are meaningful. The IOP program is not recommended. The attention is given to the residential clients and the IOP clients are not given the at time, therapy, and attention that is needed.

This facility is highly individualized. My loved one spent around 6months total and had a therapist (at times, 2), a psychiatrist and case manager involved in all facets of therapy, and integration back into normal life. cost, but I do not think you can provide the intensive services they do w/o a high cost. I would gladly recommend to anyone who can afford it. ARC was very involved with the family. they held the patient accountable but not focusing on a punishing/hard environment. They would gently guide my loved one to right actions.

Great staff top to bottom, good immersement with twelve step program, great facilities, great counseling and groups. Highly expensive without significant insurance coverage. If you have the resources to afford it or insurance can help you pay for ARC, there are few better treatment programs in the LA area
