ABOUT BRENTWOOD HOSPITAL

Located just south of central Shreveport in northwest Louisiana, Brentwood Hospital lays claim to the status of the largest psychiatric hospital in the state. The facility offers a full spectrum of mental and behavioral health services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Substance abuse treatment is available for those ages 18 and older, and consists of medically supervised detox, residential rehabilitation, and outpatient treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

This center offers short-term treatment only. Initial assessments are free and each client receives a personalized aftercare plan.

Brentwood offers a multidisciplinary program that’s firmly rooted in the 12-Steps. Among the psychiatric and medical services available are medication management, psychiatric evaluation, physical exams, and chemical dependency assessments. Also available are individual, group, and family therapy, plus education and training in relapse prevention, health and nutrition, and relaxation.

There are dedicated treatment tracks for adolescents, geriatrics, active servicemen and veterans, and women — though the last tends to focus more on mental-health problems than addiction treatment.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) for adolescents, adults, and seniors can accommodate those struggling with substance abuse, and run seven days a week.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The substance abuse program is overseen by an attending psychiatrist, and the center as a whole employs numerous M.D.s, including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and psychologists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Pictures published on Brentwood’s website show a clinical facility with a canteen-style dining room, limited outdoor space, and shared rooms. Brentwood is a 200-bed, smoke-free campus.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the 13 alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, there was only one outright negative review. The eight alumni polled on a variety of Brentwood’s offerings gave an average rating of 3.63 out of five stars for its counseling options, four stars for its exercise and leisure provisions, and 3.25 stars for its holistic offerings.

Alumni comments described the staff as nice and knowledgeable. “Treated me like a human being… really made me feel valued,” one anonymous alum added. Others praised the mental health and addiction counseling. “They specialize in mental health and can help not just treat your addiction but help give you a healthy mind,” one alum reported anonymously. Another added that they left with the tools for long-term sobriety.

Reviews also raised some areas of concern, though there were no recurring criticisms. Individual complaints cited a dated facility, a lack of exercise facilities, a long wait for a physical and required medication, and insufficient individual counseling and 12-step meetings. Alum A.H. wrote: “The staff was unprofessional,” but did not go into further detail.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Loved ones’ feedback skewed more negative. Of the seven friends or family members polled at the time of this writing, only three gave positive reviews. The most common complaint cited communication problems. For example, K.G. wrote that the hospital would not share her mother’s details with her legal guardian, J.G. reported that they couldn’t get anyone to return their calls, and Max added: “You will be talked down to by the staff.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

A single staff member has provided Rehabs.com with feedback to date. E.J. awarded the lowest score of one out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations, and meals. The former employee wrote: “This is one horrible place… The people that work hard they get rid of. The management is non existant basically.”

FINANCING

According to Brentwood’s website, most insurances are accepted, including Medicaid, Medicare, and TriCare.

I loved it I didn't like the detoxing but honestly who does!?! I learned a lot on my mental illnesses. And I had spent the entire month of February in there. And I'm very happy to say that I have cut since. And one male staff member was awesome I can't thank him enough for everything.

I was a self check in that went in for a quick change in medication. 10 days later I was still there, I spoke with the patient care advocate and directly said i found it funny that my insurance paid for 10 days and I just so happened to be kept, 10 days. I directly asked the doctor why I was still there seeing as they had changed my medication and I was feeling better, she became very upset with me, when I pressed her for an answer she yelled at me that we were done and I needed to leave her office. Now I must say there are several staff there that truly do care about the patients and their well being, but several were in fact had bad attitudes. I had one tech actually removed from the floor, after she told me that one of the other girls needed the phone, I had written my name on the list, had waited 25 mins and had my alotted 5 mins of use, when I pointed this out the tech became very upset telling me I HAD to get off the phone... Overall I enjoyed the staff that was helpful but the staff that was not helpful honestly just stressed me out even more. I actually went in happy and ready to get my medication changed and for the most part it turned into 10 days of heck.

This is one horrible place. I speak as a former employee. The people that work hard they get rid of. The management is non existant basically. One of the people has no heart and shouldnt be in charge of anything.

This hospital is a disgrace! My mother is a patient there. Sent there from the glen for eval. She has severe dementia,no short term memory,is delusional severe psychosis. Has severe.peripheral nueropathy so cannot walk and is hard of hearing and eyesight bad.my sister has total power of attorney, medical, legal. My sister told them she was on her way to take care of things when she arrived she was told they didnot need her my sister and would not discuss my mother's care with her.refused to talk with my sister. After having the glen fax copies of the legal papers my sister had with her so they grudging talked to my mom's legal guardian(my sister)so.there needs to be some people fired at that disgraceful place! I think the government needs to inspe spect the goings on there!

I would NEVER SEND ANYONE I CARE ABOUT TO THIS PLACE. My husband suffered from serious medical conditions and they were absolutely of no use or help made a bad situation worse. Who ever is in charge, you can call and call and never receive a call back the whole time my husband was there not one call back. I think some of the other staff do their best but its a paycheck. The Dr. is arrogant and does not listen to anything but him self. DO NOT USE THIS FACILITY!!!!! FOR A DUAL FACITLITY THEY ARE UNABLE TO TAKE CARE OF ANY ONE THAT SUFFERS FROM MEDICAL ISSUES

Max

If you care about your child, don't bring them here! ...you will be talked down to by the staff. I will give you a quote by the nurse supervisor..."It's in black and white. I don't care what you were told by the nurse that took your son in, you should have read every word before you signed. I learned this by working here."

Good support from staff. Knowledgeable and trained employees. Brentwood was a good hospital and they understand what you go through and they specialize in mental health and can help not just treat your addiction but help give you a healthy mind so that you can control your emotions.

The Doctors and counseling you receive but lack of exercise facilities. I've been hospitalized there twice and both times I received excellent care and the staff is knowledgable.

many years of experiences with patients and mental health. People stay sober many years after treatment. My experience with Brentwood has always been a positive one. The staff work together as one and patients feel at ease here and like they are in good hands.

My husband is currently at this place and has been there since April 14,2016 and has been stable for over a week also the doctor and counselor both stated over a week ago they have no concerns with sending him home but yet the doctor is refusing to discharge him so we think the reason is because the VA is paying for him to be there and the state is also paying them for his stay

Staff and group were strengths of the facility. Some of the doctors were weaknesses of the facility. Loved the staff very sportive.

They are good at keeping people focused on success and can train ones mind to overcome their fears and weaknesses. They provide long term treatment tools for when you are released that you can use to strengthen your mind. They do not have any weaknesses. I was considered a 'binge' addict and they had me stay for a few months and it was all in patient care and I met other people like me and they fed me, treated me like a human being, told me it was ok to have feelings, and really made me feel valued. They trained my mind to think differently so I wont be tempted to go down a rough path.

The COUNSELORS are very good. They don't play. They tell you about the reality of the disease. The food was great! What I viewed as weaknesses, while I was there, turned into strengths. They did run out of AA big books! They offer a good program, yet you have to do the work. They helped me with my foundation, and I will be forever grateful.

Womens only day room. Good nutrucious foods available. Good and knowlegable empoyes. Not enough one on couciling. Not enough 12 step meetings availabe. I believe we should be able to smoke more often. Trying to quit one habit is hard enough. When they try to make you quit smoking at the same time its very hard.

It's better than other facilities here. Now I know what to expect. I did not get a physical till almost 48 hours of being in the hospital. I was not able to receive any pain medicine. The delay in receiving my meds threw my body into a spasm and i had horrid migraines for the rest of my stay.
