Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Based out of Yuba City, Calif., 43 miles north of Sacramento, Buddy's House is a network of transitional, sober living homes for adults in early or middle recovery. In most cases, residents have completed a primary treatment program before transitioning into one of the sober living facilities. Buddy's House serves residents of Butte, Sacramento, Colusa, Nevada, Sutter, and Yuba Counties. Detox services are not available on site.

Buddy’s House does not require clients to complete an initial assessment prior to admission. While most facilities in the U.S. do require these assessments, Buddy’s House does not provide medical treatments, and clients have completed a dedicated treatment program that often requires an assessment. Clients may have to demonstrate a period of recovery time before admission.

To provide an appropriate level of supervision and support, which is based on a resident's recovery time, Buddy's House provides two phases of sober living. During Phase 1, Buddy's House offers a more controlled environment to provide adequate support for individuals in early recovery. During this phase of residency, clients attend on-site, peer-led 12-step meetings regularly and receive ongoing peer support. The 12-Step Program is used in up to 48% of treatment facilities in the U.S. and can be managed as a community-based or dedicated recovery program-based system.

Residents of Buddy's House are required to both obtain employment or be actively seeking employment while maintaining a lifestyle conducive to recovery. To assist clients with job searching, assistance may be available from local groups. However, Buddy’s House is not a part of the 40% of U.S. facilities that provide job training. Although residents are encouraged to obtain employment, clients in Phase 1 may need to adhere to certain restrictions, such as curfews and a more structured schedule. Buddy's House will also provide referrals to treatment centers, detox facilities, and outpatient programs for residents in Phase 1, if necessary.

After Phase 1, clients may transition into Phase 2 of the sober living program. During this phase, clients must still maintain the accountability of their personal recovery, but residents also enjoy increased freedom and autonomy. For instance, residents are allowed to host a guest in the home during Phase 2. Residents may live in the home during Phase 2 for as long as needed.

The sober living facilities of Buddy's House are supervised by house supervisors and peer specialists. The facility is accredited by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals making it one of 44 facilities in the state accredited by other local organizations.

While the homes of the sober living network differ, all homes are completely furnished and located in safe, residential areas with easy access to public transportation. Each house offers internet access, as well as weights and exercise equipment. Food, bedding, and laundry supplies are provided for residents. Residents may be responsible for the general upkeep and cleanliness of the home.

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com about Buddy’s House at the time of this writing generally approved of the sober living facility. The alum gave four out of five star ratings for the facility's counseling options, the cleanliness and upkeep of the home, and the affordability of the facility. Citing 12-step participation as the strength of the facility, alum R.P. wrote: "Always welcoming and understanding."

On Google, Buddy’s House earned an average of 4.1 out of five stars from 10 reviews to date.[1] Several alumni described treatment at Buddy’s House as life-changing and as the “best Sober Living program in Northern California.” However, two alumni gave negative feedback about the staff, particularly the “house managers” who have a “prison mentality.”

On the facility's official Facebook page, which can be managed, 27 reviewers gave Buddy's House an average rating of 4.1 out of five stars.[2] Many praised its accommodations and supportive environment. Alumni described the facility as “amazing” and highly effective.

On YellowPages.com, one alum gave the facility five out of five stars and described the facility as a “great place to rekindle your life.”[3] However, a neighbor of the facility described poor living conditions, including “overflowing” on-site dumpsters, “oil stain on the road & in their driveways” and as having “so many people in such tight quarters.”

On Yelp, Buddy’s House has seven positive, three negative, and one neutral reviews to date.[4] [5] Alumni described the facility’s treatment program as effective. However, two of the most recent reviews are one out of five star reviews. However, one alum indicated how they were kicked “out to the curb with my dog and the clothes on my back for absolutely no reason.” Another agreed that the facility’s staff was “UN professional” and “manipulative.”

Clients in Phase 2 pay a monthly rent of $495. Clients are required to have employment or be in the process of finding employment throughout the phases of treatment, which can help them pay for their treatment costs.

Buddy’s House uses its social media platforms to help motivate clients to continue their sober lifestyle. It routinely posts short motivational comments on its Facebook page to remind clients of what is important to their sobriety.
