Founded in 1973, Cahaba Center for Mental Health offers treatment and support for those struggling with mental health disorders, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities. The organization is headquartered in Selma, Ala., where it operates 11 facilities that provide, among other offerings, outpatient substance abuse and dual diagnosis treatment for adults, as well as substance abuse preventive services. There are also satellite offices in nearby Perry and Wilcox Counties. The organization does not offer medical detox.

Substance abuse treatment is offered at two intensities: intensive outpatient (IOP) and general outpatient. Within each treatment intensity there are two treatment tracks: one for the general adult population, and one for pregnant women and women with dependent children. At the time of this writing, the organization does not provide details of its substance abuse treatment program, but the two loved ones polled by to date indicated that treatment included a good range of counseling options and mediocre holistic treatment.

Cahaba also offers a program for dual diagnosis, which includes individual and group counseling, peer support, family support, and recovery education, as well as psychiatric services, medication management, case management, and dedicated “Double Trouble Support Groups.” The center can also provide job referrals.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff; however, both individuals polled by to date gave the center four stars for its staff’s level of training and experience.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of this facility, and secondary review sites yielded just two reviews: a three-star rating and a five-star rating on Facebook.[1] “Good places to take care of love one they care they love,” G.H. wrote in the only accompanying piece of commentary.

Both loved ones polled by to date gave mostly positive feedback, indicating that they would recommend the facility and awarding it four or five stars each for its treatment effectiveness and its counseling options. Some categories received more mixed or mediocre ratings: two three-star ratings went to the center’s holistic offerings, and a two-star rating and a five-star rating to both its family participation and its treatment for co-occurring disorders. “It was beneficial that the facility is family based,” one anonymous reviewer wrote, while the other praised the facility’s customer service but added: “Treatments could have been improved.”

“I've learned the importance of being compassionate and confidential with others life experiences, problems, and concerns,” an anonymous staffer wrote in a three-star review on — the only staff review available at the time of this writing — indicating that a caring quality is a valued asset in staff at this facility.[2] However, the reviewer continued: “The hardest part of the job is actually getting the clients settled when attempting to teach class and keeping them focused. Also, it is difficult to keep every client under control when multiple people are experiencing behavior issues,” suggesting that sessions might sometimes be disrupted by unruly clients.

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs; however, the two individuals polled by to date gave the center a four-star rating and a five-star rating for its affordability.
