Situated in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, 30 miles southwest of Rochester, the Behavioral Health Care Line at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center offers both short- and long-term inpatient treatment programs and outpatient services to veterans struggling with substance abuse. It is one of the state's only 146 (17.3 percent) centers in the state with services specifically for veterans. The Behavioral Health Care Line also offers a Mentally Ill Chemically Addicted (MICA) rehabilitation program to address the specific needs of individuals with co-occurring disorders, including depression, anxiety, bi-polar, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).


According to the facility's website, Canandaigua VA Medical Center has been in operation since 1933, and provides a full continuum of care, from initial assessment to aftercare planning.

Programming includes individual therapy, group counseling, alternative therapy, and educational sessions. Aftercare planning includes references to vocational training, community programs, and long-term treatment if necessary.

The Behavioral Health Care Line offers inpatient and outpatient treatment services to veterans struggling with chronic issues related to substance abuse. The VISN2 Behavioral Health Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Program offers a highly structured, supportive environment for veterans who struggle with chronic substance use, homelessness and/or are in need of vocational assistance; the average length of stay is three to six months.


The center's website notes the treatment team includes a diverse staff of healthcare and wellness professionals such as physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, and social workers. The two alumni polled by to date provided a four- and a five-star rating for the level of staff support.


There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, the two alumni surveyed by at the time of this writing gave five- and four- out of five stars for accommodations and amenities.


The two former clients polled by at the time of this writing provided mostly positive feedback. They both gave five out of five stars when surveyed on whether the program was worth the cost.

Alum J.D.B. praised the center's ability to address co-occurring disorders. "I needed a program that addressed my addiction as it related to my bi-polar disorder; I've been clean since I did the program in 2000," she wrote. In addition, she provided four stars for extracurricular options, but only two stars for holistic offerings.

Alum D.T. noted the center was worth the cost because Canandaigua VA Medical Center "targeted several issues Veterans face day to day." This individual also provided a five- out of five-star rating for the center's extracurricular opportunities.

"Near perfect environment for prior service members to be able to interact with like individuals," D.T. wrote.

Reviews on secondary sites were slightly more mixed, with an average rating of 3.4 out of five stars based on 28 Google reviews to date.[1] Most individual agreed that there were long wait times, but opinions varied about quality of care. "Could not be any better awesome staff and doctors," one satisfied reviewer wrote, while another commented, "Some of the worst care imaginable."


A friend of a former client offered their recommendation along with a the highest five out of five stars for all surveyed categories, including holistic offerings, leisure activities, counseling options, and family involvement. “They were all nice and helpful,” this individual wrote about the staff.


The center's website notes as a VA medical center, this facility accepts military insurance, placing it amongst the 28.3 percent of centers in the state to do so.

Near perfect environment for prior service members to be able to interact with like individuals.

It was a VA program, so I was the only woman with about 32 men in the program. As a female, you may want to seek a regular MICA program; but, if you suffer from mental illness, I implore you to seek a MICA really does help tie things together & provide solutions to our individual problems.
